Field ready and plants hardening off...time to plant

This is a lot of work but I started growing more than what we could use and giving to needy families, donating to churches that prepare meals for people out of work. Two years ago my wife asked why I was planting so many potatoes. I told her to give to the hungry. We donated 800 lb of potatoes that year. Last year we sold produce, gave to families out of work, and give regularly to a couple of assisted living facilities. The older ladies there loved the fresh produce and when my wife would take them a half bushel of green beans to string, break and cook they were over joyed. Most had not done that for many years.

If only a small percentage of people did this type of giving back, the world would be a much better place ! Thanks for sharing that, and keep up the great work !

We used to take green beans and other vegetables down to the local senior citizens center and they loved it, not only for the fresh veggies, but also work involved in preparing them. We did it for three years, then the manager told us that they couldn't accept them anymore because they hadn't been inspected and there was a chance someone could get sick!
I'd sure as heck trust something out of a local garden more than a frozen or canned food item that had been prepared in Mexico or China.

There was one real nice lady there (Charlotte) that actually had me take her to our house one day and she showed my wife how to make some of the best darned sauerkraut I've ever eaten! Her daughter in law still comes out and picks tomatoes and beans for canning and juicing and Charlotte sits right there in the truck and and fusses about the centers policy.
There are several people here locally that I keep stocked with fresh veggies in season and canned tomato juice and sauerkraut through the winter. I give them green beans so they can can or freeze them, I just never got much out of sitting for hours breaking beans.

It seems kind of funny to me, but nobody wants canned tomatoes anymore, they all want juice. I always liked having canned tomatoes on hand for soups, chili and stuff

That certainly sounds like a really stupid fellow, probably never had a job that he wasn't sponging off the people as in "public service job". I suppose he thinks that all the fresh vegetable in a supermarket have been "inspected" when in reality they come from the same type of folks that you are but pass thru a brokerage house (farmers market type place).
