Well, because of the Spring weather, I missed out on the 684 I was considering.

Now I'm considering the following:

1975 White 1370 MFWD for approx $9700
1972 Massey 165 52 hp 1900 hours $5500
JD 3020 approx $8500
1982 AC 5050 $8500
Case 1490 3000 hours $8000

The White has a loader, is open station with no ROPS.
The Massey is a bit weathered but seems to run well.
The 3020 is diesel and seems, from description and pics, to be in good shape.
The AC is local and seems to be in very good shape, to look at.
The Case looks to be in immaculate condition. Well cared for and did even have AC before the belt broke. Probably would need some recharge and service.

So if I want to poke post holes in the ground, rake, run a small square baler and run a bushhog, which would you recommend?

The advantage of a couple of these is being able to run a round baler as well.

My vote would be for the MF165 if it was in a little better outside shape. Then again if it is in good mechanical shape with decent tires you could have it repainted. About the only downfall to the Massey is the front end will get a little wobble but can be fixed. My second vote would be the John Deere 3020. The Deere is a great machine but may be just a little big for what your doing. You never said if these are Diesel? I would highly recommend Diesel. As for the other three tractors they just are not very popular at all. Im not saying there bad but those particular models just where not big salers. If I had to choose a third I would go Case.

165 Massey would be my choice.

Notforhire, I might consider that but it's more $ than I really want to sink into this.

I just found a 1020 for sale with loader. Would a 1020 run a square baler?

What's a 1020 in good shape with loader worth? I don't know yet if its gas or diesel.

The 1020 is around 39 PTO hp so you can check that against the requirement of your baler. Here is a list of used 1020s; http://www.tractorhouse.com/list/list.aspx?ETID=1&catid=1100&Manu=JOHN+DEERE&Mdltxt=1020&mdlx=exact Your talking about a machine that is at least 40 years old, so condition is everything.

That 5045D was a rental return BTW Deere treats them the same as new, with 0% financing and any other deals that they are currently running. New loaders from JD run around $5K.
Here is a used one for $10,900 w/538hrs. ; http://www.tractorhouse.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=7456391 If you are looking at 30 YO tractors in the $8-10K range, I would think you would be better off with a three YO 5045. :scratchchin:
I understand that sometimes a few thousand dollars can make the difference between affordable and no way can I do this. :eek:It's your money so please don't feel like I'm telling you how to spend it. I'm just throwing a few ideas out there for you to sort through.

If you want a loader, and you want to buy an older machine like a 1020, I would buy the tractor with the loader rather than trying to find one that fits after the fact. The problem is, loader use can, depending on the operator, be hard on tractors.

Best, Bill
