What weight oil in eastern NC?

USE deisel rated oil. delvac, rotella, dello, any of those. I use 15w 40, if i were to go syn it would be 5w40
But you realize the 2 oils you are talking about are really the same weight once you get warm. You always want to use the lowest first number as you can and still maintain the weight you want in that second number. What i mean is both 10w30 and 10w40 is 30 weight oil, its just one acts like 10w cold and one 20w when cold. The thinner the oil, or lower first number, the faster it will flow cold, which means it will get to the top of the motor and bearings faster.

I know I'm old and don,t think to good any more, but could someone explain this to me?Oil gets thinner when cold?
Go outside on a 20deg.morning and pour out some 10w30 oil,now wait till its a 100deg. and do the same and tell me which pours faster.

All oils get thicker as the temperature gets colder. A chart of pour time vs temperature has a sloped line. (A flat line would indicate same pour time at any temperature).

But multigrade oils don't thicken as much as a single-grade oil, as temperature goes down.

Example: 15w40 is a 40 wt oil at operating temperatures but when cold it is thinner than straight 40 wt would be when cold. It is rated to pour easier than straight 20 wt will at that cold temperature. But both pour more slowly cold, compared to warm.

I'll check Walmart out for the oil. I want good stuff for my tractor, but I don't want to spend dollars, that I don't have to. Thanks for the tips.

Oil, like anything else. You get what you pay for. $20.00 per gal oil ( shell, delo, etc ) is going to be better oil than $10.00 ? per gal oil

I use Shell Rotella T6. OReillys seems to have an OK price. My local Walmarts does not carry any full synthetic diesel oil. Plenty of discussion of synthetic versus regular but I have used synthetics the past 30 years with good results. I think I have seen the Shell oils at Tractor Supply.

Dello Oil is Dello regardless of whether you buy it at Nappa, the dealer, walmart TSC etc. I have loggers that are running $250K equiptment that is less than a year or two old and there running dello rotella T etc etc. SOme are running Napa brand when cheaper. Its all made in just a few refineries. The Walmart brand super tech or whatever it is now a days is made or distributed by Warren oil company which labels is own oil as warren makes most private oils like advance auto and also makes the TSC house brand of Traveller oil.

As far as the oil weights California did a good job, I will repeat what he said in my own jumbled explination.

All oil comparing it to itself will pour slower when cold vs hot. BUT multi weight oil has different pour rates. 10w40 oil will pour faster at say 30F than will 15w40 as the latter is a 15w when cold or a thicker oil than the 10w oil of the first. They will both pour or flow the same when the engine is hot as they are both 40w oils when warm.

SAE

S-ame A-s E-verybode else.

if it meets the spec and you change it at proper interval.. you should be fine.

every mornign i go to work and look at a construction yard full of heavy equipment and trucks.

we buy bulk oils.

I can't atest to having seen a lube related failure since I was hired in in 1987.

Probably wouldn't get an oil related failure with st. 30 wt. What I'm saying is, Supertec oil can't compare to oil as say, delo, shell, etc (any of the name brands) ,. delo , shell, will have way better add package then supertec. I didn't say it didn't meet specs. It probably meets min specs... To each their own . If you want min specs. or something that goes beyond min specs... Do you want the doc that just gets by in med school or the doc that goes above and beyond in med school ? Both are docs right ?

at wal marts here. you can buy delo in full synthetic and shell rotella full synthetic. May be others. I have only seen/used the dello synthetic & shell t 6 here. I just got back a UAO using shell T6 with excellent results Oil was in service for 1 yr.Virgin shell T6 has something like 12.6 TBN

if the oil meets the manufactures spec.. and you change it at the correct interval. ie.. are changeing it before the adds are depleted.. you should be fine.

again... i've not documented a lube related failure in the 26 ys i've been working at that general contractor... and we buy bulk oils.... ie... what drum of 30w and utf is best price ths month.

what can you get me for my 500g fuel/lube truck tanks... what can you get me for my shop bulk tank. etc.

meet spec and go.

not many points for paying more to brag about.

I have some equipment that meets it's oil change interval in DAYS.

when you are draingin 15gals engine oil on a piece of equipment because it's silica content is maxed out.. not it's oil spec is depleted after 200 hrs.. you aren't gaining anything by using a 25$ a gallon ol vs a 13$ a gallon oil.

it's all application. you wanna pay more.. go for it.

if you have an application that can use it and benefit from it.. that's a good reason to.

where we have applications that will benefit from higher priced oils. ( syn's in some applications ). and can make use of them.. we do. for the most part.. the regular 'fleet' stuff.. no....

Fleet,,,,,, If I'm not paying ,I wouldn't care what was used. I pay my hard earned $$ for my stuff and have to keep several of my company trucks running for the business. I don't use the lowest price oils on the market even in my small fleet.AS I said, If you used st 30 wt oil and changed regular you probably wouldn't have an engine failure. Even in a diesel
