Well, I see T-B-N will not let me link to my own photo bank.
I see what you mean now. Go to "My Home" then to "General Settings" (shortcut here) and scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section. Under "Enhanced Attachment Uploading" choose the "Enhanced Attachment Uploading off" radio button.

I sort of feel like a dunce on this but if my "Enhanced Attachment Uploading" button was set as "on" and I now click it to "off" will my old photos disappear or just the new ones stop being saved?

No problem. changing that setting just turns off the screen where it shows your current attachments and only shows the "choose which file(s) you want to upload" boxes. You can switch back and forth at any time.
