Hi All

Just joined the forum.

I am currently restoring a Massey ferguson 188 4 wheel drive that i bought in boxs and a skid unit.
It is a factory built tractor not a conversion.
To date brakes gearbox multipower and engine are done. tractor is running and driving.
Working on the front axle at the moment. all bearings and seals replaced so far. seals and o rings
to do next in the front drop box.
Will work it for a bit to see if i have any motr oil leaks.

The steering is orbital unit and the engagement of the 4 WD is hydraulic.
Its really something different in Ireland.

I also have a 35 3 Cyl MF 135 MF148 MF165

Looking forward to hearing from all the MF people here

Looked at your pictures - very impressive venture!!

I have a very old 2WD 6-speed 188. I aspire to do what you have done. First need to put some facilities in place before starting that.Mine is fitted with front loader (lots of hydraulic leak-down) and sadly, no power steering.

In the meantime I would like to just get mine going. I have had no success finding operator/service/repair manuals. Please advise suitable grades oil for engine, gearbox and antifreeze.

I should be able to mail you a workshop manual for your 188.
they are the same machine ftom the front axle back.
Yours is a Coventry British built machine. All the parts are available to put power steering on the machine.
Send me some pictures please. Any help you need I will help as much as possible.

You are most kind and your offer highly appreciated!

And to be sure may well need some help - have never owned or used a tractor before.

I will put some photos together and make it available in the course of the morning (it is 21:20 here and winter) .

Where are you situated?

In the mean time keep well there

Regards

I am in midlands Ireland. Summer here but nothing like your summer.
Forgot to tell you my tractor is french built. Apart from a few differences they are basically the same.
My name is Alan. With any work just take one step at a time.
Thats the most important thing i can tell you

Glad to meet Alan - name is Wouter. Live about midway (25Kms from both) between Johannesburg & Pretoria.

Will take your advice to heart - would not be surprised to find even doing one thing at a time challenging.

The scale of tools seemingly required including nut/bolt sizes/torque effort to manipulate and axle stands to support 3 tonnes-plus seems daunting.

Will be interesting...
