Here's the list of tomatoes we plant and is based on what has worked well for us over the years for disease resistance and overall health. We time it so we have fresh tomatoes on a regular basis over the summer. Lots of people have recorded "Homegrown Tomatoes" but this fiddle accented version is pretty good. They seem to be having the most fun.
Home Grown Tomatoes - YouTube

I grew lots of different heirlooms. 400-600 plants a season over several years.
I trialed probably 50 different ones.

I had an ongoing contract with resturant chef who needed about 100lbs at a time. He wanted all the different colors reds, pinks, whites, yellows, blacks, for mixed tomato salads, salsa's and to make sliced tray presentations for catered affairs.

There's over 2 dozen I'd easily recommend for their exceptional flavor. Some are almost fruit like in taste. Most heirlooms varieties arent usually heavy producers but some yield much better than others. As much as I like a regular juicy ripe hybrid red tomato I'm hooked on the heirlooms.

Any of these were good for me. Most of them came from TT.
And of course there are plenty of others :D

Orange strawberry, red strawberry, caspian pink, prudens purple, brandywine, cherokee purple, marizol purple, orange russian, anna russian, purple russian, red oxhart, orange oxhart, german johnson, german pink, rose, druzba, azoychka, black plum, black pear, black cherry, speckled roman, roman candle, paul robeson, carbon, kellogs breakfast, marianna's peace, and the old burpee delicious just to name a few.

I always said to my ex when we farmed together that all we need to do is sell rocks and if we got a dollar for every for rock we picked we'd be rich! :D

I was just out in NE Colorado and there was a guy who had rocks for sale - literally about a 3 acre patch where he had set up a bunch of large rocks for landscapers, homeowners, etc to purchase at 150/ton. I had to stop in - anybody that can find a way to make money selling rocks when they are all over the area was somebody I had to meet.

Current veggie plot is about 20x20. The garden is bigger than that, but I planted several fruit trees back there (avocado, fig, orange, pear, apple, peach, almond) and they take up a significant amount of planting space. As does the grape vine trellis.

Currently I have 14 tomato plants, including some late arrivals in 15 gal pots. Also pole and bush beans, snow peas, summer and winter squash, cucumbers, hot peppers, and some greens for salad. Still have to plant a small adjacent area with more greens (lettuce) and maybe some basil and cilantro.

I make my own compost with ivy and other clippings and kitchen waste. It has done wonders to condition the heavy clay soil here. Sometimes I supplement it with a simple 16-16-16 NPK fertilizer, when there are too many browns vs greens in the pile. I use Smith-Hawkin compost bins - each is about 1-2 cu yds.

Not heirloom as far as I know but its a great tomato and another favorite of mine. I grew them for years. Sweet and juicy. It's that type of tomato that just keeps getting riper and riper till you cant slice it anymore! :D

Thanks DFB I was looking under Heirloom, so that is why I couldn't find anything on it.

I'll never figure whats up with the marketing ideas of crossing an heirloom tomato with a hybrid such burpee brandy boy or the latest one a grafted rootstock brandywine. Seen some today at our greenhouse. Since heirloom classification is all about the original plant heritage do the producers actually believe it qualifies as heirloom. I just shake my head.

They are just trying to make a name for themselves. I hope that with those being a hybrid they still produce, the seeds came from tomatoes from last year. I am starting my watermelon in the garage as it is still dipping down here yet, I still have corn and beans to plant but I think there is still time.

The thing is not made for the puriests that wont eat genetically mod food but for most folks who want a fruit that wont bruise as easy a prolific fruiter, one that grows all year fast and one that is DISEASE resisatant is the big one. So many find that if you can have all that i just wrote and the taste and look of the heirlooms you have a win win. I personally dont plant heirlooms. I plant what i like which is a acidy tomato tasteing plant. I dont like sweet tomatoes. I admit i am not against trying them i just never have.

$7.50 for a single plant!!!? That"s nuts. There are so many things that can kill a tomato plant after it is set out that paying that much is just wacko, in my opinion. That's even more shocking than them calling it a heirloom. I won't even pay Walmart's inflated price of $3.38 a plant. I buy at the local greenhouse @ $18 for a flat of 48 plants. I can pick and choose among several plants so I get the healthiest looking plants because they have thousands for sale. I was back at that same greenhouse a few weeks back to buy annual flowers and they'd lowered their price to $11 per flat. How can anyone pay $7.50 for a tomato plant? That's nothing against you, DFB, but I've had so many plants fail after setting out that I think those buyers are just lookin' for something to show off to friends. I understand that you can't do all that grafting work and sell the plant cheap, but my head is spinning over the cost.:D

But these are special! :D

Dont worry Jim...for the discriminating buyer we still sell 6pks of tomatoes for $3.00 ea or a whole flat for $15 ;)

Nice set up, jinman. Looks easier than individual cages. Will be interesting to see how well it works. I didn't see netting with the dimensions you use on Amazon. Do you mind sharing where you got it?

Memphis Net & Twine
, all sizes are available. They have the best prices and choice of sizes I've found. My 328' roll was a bit over $55.

Dang straight, that looks like a great price compared to what I've seen so far. Thanks much for sharing!
