I just finishing changing the oil and my mower deck and now when i engage the PTO it sounds like alot of rattling going on. Last year when i turned it in it sounded like a big fan, any ideas where to start and what to check?

Im not getting any vibrations up through the tractor and it seems to be cutting ok.

Did you use gear oil in the gear box? did you get the correct amount of oil in the gear box? Is the drive shaft connected correctly? Remove the mower and check for contact damage on the underside or look and determine if something is being struck by the drive shaft. Check your wrenches, are you missing one and it has slipped under one of the covers on the deck? And last, I don't think I would mow until the big fan sound returns, serious damage could occur.

i emptied the gear box and "Washed" it with penetrating oil and refilled with 75w90 synthetic. I filled it from the bleeder till it came out of the inspection holes and closed it up, reinstalled the gear box brackets and put it all back together. I am assuming the oil is good and it must be something with the belt drive or a blade not turning properly.

Make sure your blades are on right, I had one of those that didn't get all the way up on the spindle right one time and it caused a noise but no vibration. Also, it could be a belt or a bearing, if you get time, take the belt loose and spin the pullies. Also, I noticed mine got louder with age. It roared a lot more than when I first got my 855 it back in '00. Since traded it in and now have a 72 and it's much quieter being it's new and all.

Mine had a rattle one time. It was a pulley bearing that broke while the deck continued to cut grass. The pulley was an idler and it continued to spin with the belt, but with the bearing gone it spun on the attachment bolt. I never did find the pieces of the bearing. Had to replace both the pulley and the bolt. While attaching the new pulley I could tell one more piece to hold the top of the bearing was needed that was not shown on the JD parts drawing. The dealer agreed and ordered that additional part for me at no charge. It was the same piece as used on the bottom. The new pulley and attaching parts was a new design different from what my deck originally had.

I think the problem has been identified. You stated you removed the brackets......and re-installed....Start in this area. It sounds like you did not correctly re-install or miss-installed one of the bracket or left something loose like I do, it seem I am doing this a lot lately.
