Sounds a stupid question, but I'm having trouble reading the dipstick on Mule 2510. It was spewing oil so I assumed that the service guy had overfilled it. Dipstick showed oil well above hashed area so I drained it, little by little, but still got a reading above the hash marks. Eventually I drained it completely & refilled with just 1.8 litres, but still getting a reading above the full level? Sounds silly, but I've never had a similar problem on any other vehicle.

I'm not familiar with that exact engine, but the crankcase isn't filling with gasoline is it? On some a faulty fuel pump can leak into the crankcase. If so, you should smell the gasoline on the stick.

thank you, but i don't think so. The oil looks in good shape.

David,

I don't know about your engine, but the owner's manual for the Kawasaki engine in my ZTR says to measure the oil level without screwing the dipstick in; i.e, clean the dipstick, return to the tube, and then withdraw it. I don't know the difference in registered oil levels, but screwing in the dipstick will result in a higher registered level.

Steve

PS: Another idea. Is the 1.8 liter capacity without a filter change?

Thank you. Mine isn't a screw in just a push fit... Spoke to the dealer, but they weren't any help. I'll just keep a close eye for now..

Hmm make sure the machine is parked completely level and let it sit and cool all overnight. This should let everything settle evenly and the oils should be a little more viscous and easier to get a proper reading.

If your eyes are still having a hard time (not insulting your eyes friend just trying to help) you can take a file and rough up the edges of the dipstick, then wash it with soap and water to get all the oil residue off, and insert it carefully. When pulling it out keep it vertical and try and look for the wet glint.

If you think it is staying overfull either smell it for gas leak, or drip some of the engine oil on a hot muffler to see if it sizzles and pops, indicating coolant leaking into the system.

Hope this helps.

May want to check the dipstick against another one at the Parts Dept. Had a dipstick for a Suburban that was a little longer than spec, oil always read high, dipstick was sitting lower in the pan than it should have been. I just throughly drained the oil, added the specified amount, checked oil several times and marked the stick at that level. Not sure of the config on your application but the dipstick tube could be seated a little deeper than it should, result would be the same.

Does the oil still spew after you performed the 1.8l refill?

Dave
