My adventures continued last night with a ride to a local nature area. The weather was perfect, sunny and a comfortable 70 degrees.

Before the trip, I needed to check the coolant. I started the bike to let it warm up a little. All of a sudden the bike stalls. I start it up and it stalls immediately once again. I start it up and open the throttle a little, stalls again. It was as if it wasn't getting any fuel. Then I remember to turn the fuel value to the "on" position. The bike fired back up again and continued running.

I looked at the coolant reservoir but I couldn't see any fluid in there so I drove the bike up to have my brother check it out with me. Up there we were able to see the coolant level and it was fine. It appeared to be blueish so I'll have to research that a little more. I gave him my trip details and off I went.

This trip was going to involve a short run on two major highways in the area. One is a two lane and the other is a four lane. I started my journey. As I approached the first major highway there were three other bikers in front of me so I followed them and to my surprise they were turning onto the same road I was going.

Apparently, they were not out for a joy ride, because as soon as we turned onto the rural road they took off! I kept going about the speed limit which was 45 mph. As I approached the four lane highway I wasn't sure which way to go because of the way the intersection is laid out, but I always say when in doubt go right. So right it was!

There weren't many cars on the four lane so it was a nice ride for about half a mile, then I turned off onto the road to the nature area. The exit ramp was recently repaved, but as soon as you crest the little hill the paved road turns into a shale road. Thankfully, I was not traveling fast and had no problems making the adjustment to the road condition.

The nature area was about a mile down the road. As I approached the parking lot, I saw the biggest black bear I have ever seen in my entire life. He looked at me and started to walk away. Then he turned and looked at me again, so I revived up the bike and he continued on his way. I was not carrying my gun at the time either. Even if I was, I don't think my 9mm would have done much too him. Time to start researching .357's again!

I looked around briefly at the nature area and it didn't look like it was maintained very well. The trails were not trimmed. Obviously there is at least one gigantic bear that roams the area. I may head back again to check it out, but I think I'll take some protection with me next time!

Back on the bike to the four lane highway. Another half mile to the next exit and then back home. It was a great ride, about 25 miles in 45 minutes. The next ride will be to the gas station. Until then..... The joys of living in the country.

Nice! Aren't you glad you were not on a bicycle? :)

Ah, another reason for loud pipes! Warn the bear away!:laughing::laughing:

Here I am, wanting to SEE the bear so I can get photos, the OP is out for a joy ride and finds Mr. Yogi without trying. Not fair I tell ya! Not fair!:laughing::laughing:

Did the OP see Boo-Boo? ;) :D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Grab one of those big pepper spray canisters too. They shoot a surprisingly long way and im sure it would work on other "animals" too.

To the OP, don,t forget to shoot with your camera as well. We all love pictures.
Any time I go into an area that might have bears, I also talk a fat buddy into coming with me.
That way, I don,t have to worry about outrunning the bear, I only have to outrun my buddy. LOL

I had my phone in my pocket but of course it was stuck when I tried to pull it put so couldn't get a picture. I didn't see any cubs and I wasn't about to go looking around for any!

After high school I switched from dirt bikes (motorcycle) to mountain bikes (pedal). Never even thought about carrying any protection. Then a few years ago I was attacked by a turkey and ever since then I have tried to carry at least a knife with me everywhere I go. My wife carries the pepper spray. Of course I carry hoping that i never actually have to use it!

Good trip, Wes! Stay safe.

Ditto! I hate to say it, but I'm starting to view motorcyclists with the same trepidation that I do kids on bicycles... you never know what they're going to do, and too many feel that the rules of the road don't apply to them. :( Last week I was making a left hand turn on the inside lane of two for that purpose; halfway around the corner the 3 bikers on the outside switched lanes and cut me off. Fortunately I was almost expecting it, or there'd be a few less Harleys on the road. Two miles later I was slowing for a yellow light when I noticed that the kid riding behind me was gawking off at the horizon... took my foot off the brake and blew the light just as it went red with him still on my bumper... I doubt he has a clue that he even went through an intersection. When I used to ride I had a very healthy respect for a step and tow... Maybe Harley's are equipped with air bags? ;)

Still there's no better way to travel... one thing you'll come to realize though is that if you carry a camera you will NEVER see anything to take a picture of...
Yet the first time you leave it at home the wildlife will line up waiting for you to take a snapshot... and you will see the most spectacular sunset ever!

Being involved in MSF training I'm always amazed at the amount of misinformation students show up with. Helmets cause broken necks. Don't use the front brake or you'll go over the bars. Sometimes ya gotta lay er down. Loud pipes save lives, so I am personally exempt from taking any responsibility for my own safety.

It's as if in some crowds learning stopped back in the 1950s.

I ride 25,000-40,000 miles a year and am pretty good at picking out the inattentive riders, what we call sloth riders. Absolutely no situational awareness, no scanning for threats, no head checks before lane changes. It's worse in the springtime when all the chrome comes back out from winter hibernation.

Treat them all like deer: clueless and unpredictable.
