These evil insects are akin to the Yellow Flies down here. Two things that kinda work are milk jugs in dark colors coated with glue and an umbrella setup that was talked about here last year. (see #13 here:http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/251138-help-getting-rid-deer-flys-2.html)

As I mentioned there, the Dawn Soap followed by anti-itch cream really helps hold down the reaction I (and my Grand-daughter) get to the bites.

I do something similar but with a blue baseball cap. That way i can use it when walking. I have heard of people using a blue Dixie cup with tangle foot on it mounted to a hat or duct tape reversed (sticky side out).

It's the real deal, folks!!!!!
I used the blue-solo-cup-for-a-hat trick & it works, period. Other colors have been tested and found to be less effective. It seems deer flies aren't drawn to known fly baits. btw: put a black garbage bag over a hanger with the blue cup on top and hang it outside to rake 'em in if you don't want to be seen wearing a blue Devo hat. ;)

I think they are also called no seeums

'No seeums' are related to 'black flies' that we see in 'da UP', eh?. We have both here in MI & both tiny buggers are NASTY! And, they both go right through most mosquito netting. :yuck:

Where are you finding Tangle Foot? They are not allowed to sell it here due to an EPA ruling banning it. The deer flies must have a strong lobby. Been looking for a substitute.

Moose flies must be regional dialect as we call them horse flies here, they take a bite like a horse, man them things hurt. I do not like Summer due to the deer flies, horse flies, buffalo gnats, bald face hornets, yellow jackets, and various other insect that think I am a walking buffet. My wife can walk right beside me and they will ignore her and concentrate on me with the exception of the buffalo gnats, they will chew on anyone.

We get our Tangle Foot at Agway (not sure if that is a nationwide store or not). I assume horse and moose flies are probably the same thing but are just called moose flies here in Maine for the obvious reasons.
