Weird part about the story is that Copperheads like the '100 to 700' foot elevation.

I Think the memorandum to the copperheads in my area may not have been delivered:shocked:

Maybe it's the tropical storms and hurricanes that send them to higher ground!

We have plenty of copperheads here, and we are from 1200 to 1300+ feet here.

In 1971 I attended the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy at Ft Benning Georgia. We trained a lot in the swamps. Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and Cottonmouths were common. Being from Northern Missouri I was not familiar with Rattlers and Copperheads. I learned early on that a Rattler will get out of your way if given the opportunity and is not what I would consider aggressive. The Copperhead on the other hand will lay in waiting, will not retreat unless pushed off his ground and eagerly uses his fangs. Hated them. Cottonmouths would lay on a log in the swamps and let you go by with little fuss. Didn't mind them until they slid off into the water with me, then creeped me out...

Waded the swamps of Vietnam for awhile. Had all sorts of snakes I'd never saw before. Had em crawl on me at times when I couldn't do much about it.

Lived in a tent along the Tigris River for awhile. Had rodents. Killed them all. The locals said "no don't kill the rodents, as long as you have rodents you don't have a snake in the tent, if the rodents disappear you've got a snake" That creeped me out too.

I'm like Harrison Ford in that one Indiana Jones movie. "Why's it always gotta be snakes, I hate snakes".

You just keep them all over there James, haha. I have only seen one in the last 20 years here. He was buried in the wood pile. Scared the living bejebers out of me. Lots of Black snakes and a few grass snakes. I'm like everyone else. I leave the Black snakes alone but they still scare me when I come up on them unexpectedly.

i had a little encounter with one by the front porch here, the wife and I were cleaning out the leaves that blow in the corner and I was working within 1 foot with my hands to the copperhead.. Didn't get bit, but scared the heck out of me.. I pinned it down with something and the wife "shoveled" it.. The fangs came out then for sure! He was just a little one, but I would not liked to have gotten bit on the hand by him.

Too darn close for sure. I do not like those things at all. Or rattle snakes. but of course most of the time you get a little warning from them.
