Hi,
I have an MTD 20hp riding mower, and I have been trying to take very good care of it, since I cannot afford a new mower right now. It is about a 2001 model, and my this past week, it seems like everything went bad. I had to replace the battery, the drive belt, and the starter just started smoking. That is really not the odd issue. I was mowing with it today, after replacing the drive belt that had slipped off. I put it back together exactly how it had been put together since I've had it, and it worked great for an hour. I went up a hill, got stuck, and the drive belt slipped off again. The odd part is, I put the belt back on, and when I went to shift, the gears are reversed. There are two forward speeds(forward slow, and forward fast) and one reverse along with a 10 speed selector lever on the side. Now when I put the gear lever below the steering wheel into forward low, or forward high, the tractor is in revers. When I put the lever in reverse, the mower goes forward. It is not grinding or slipping. Any idea on what could have happened? I am completely lost on hw to repair this. I know how to fix the slipping belt. It needs new belt guides, but the drive being reversed baffles me. Any thoughts? Thanks!
