I have read that the Hemp issue has been fought through the courts, and the ability to grow industrial hemp is preserved, but that the DEA disagrees, so they hassle you to the point you really cannot benefit from the court's decision. This could be bunk, but I believed it the last time I did a "info round up" on this topic.
Industrial can replace cotton for most things, and required little in pesticides whereas cotton requires lots. Hemp can crowd the weeds out of a field. Hemp itself may be judged a week by some.
I had hopes that hemp production would be a way we could grow energy using living green collectors. There is plenty of energy there, but getting at it can be a challenge. If someone plopped some cash in my hands, and said "go, figure it out" I'd start with rumen bacteria. I also hold some hope that a steam cracking approach could be developed.
I know it can be used for plastics, and I know that it can be used instead of carbon black in some products.
The seeds are higher in protein that soybeans, have no trypsin inhibitor we would have to denature through heat, and it is high in omega-3's.
That's what I remember off the top of my head from last time.
