When I was just out of HS I heard about someone that went blind at welder training at Bath Iron Works. Someone in a welder training class left their flip up lens on their hood up. Claimed the instructor didn't tell them to put it down.

I am temporarily working in Angola Africa and I have caught a little Vietnamese welder welding several times with his flip up visor up and just using his dark safety glasses. HIS EXCUSE is that he cant see with the hood which is valid as he has been supplied with a number 12 lens and is using 3/32 ER 6010 rods. His glasses are really dark and so far he hasn't flash burned his eyes which is amazing given the amount of time that he welds. He is welding up some light weight tubing while customizing some sea containers for offices. We have been trying unsuccessfully for 3 weeks to make his company buy him another lens in number 8 or 9 shade but it is like talking to a wall. The welder keeps working so they dont buy anything. Very poor working conditions here for the locals. Also the clear lens in the hood is a piece of cut window pane glass rather than a plastic lens or even the tempered glass normally seen about 40 years ago.
