Yep......we can our own tuna.......haven't bought a storebought can for a long time. My wife's canned tuna sandwiches are to die for......with my handful of chips and a pickle.......life is good!!:drink:

Pretty harsh & judgmental, don't you think.
Not everyone has a wife to help out or time to spend a whole day in the kitchen. - I live alone.
Not everyone has a freezer. I had one, when I figured out the cost to run it I gave it away.
How long would it take a single person to use 20 pounds of beans or rice.
About every 2 months or so I want a banana or cocoanut cream pie. By the time everything needed to make one is acquired, in my case it would cost more to make it then to buy one.
I'm not up to it anymore but a short week for me when working was 60 hours.
By choice, there are many things more important to me than spending a lot of time cooking & cleaning up afterward.
Buying a steer or side of beef is not at all practical for most people
Eventually food even dried or in a freezer goes bad.
What about coffee & beer (Your right I don't have to have either.) & Milk about $3 a gallon.

But since you have everything figured out for folks, what is your solution to high price of fuel & electric.

TCJ Unfortunately, this inflation hits the under-employed or marginally-employed the hardest. These people spend the bulk of their wages on just those items: food and fuel (and rent, of course). Don't worry about those health care premiums, though. When Obamacare kicks in, they're going to go down by $2500 per family.
Did you really mean that?? It is a sad Joke on the US people.
If you are employed Obama care is already costing you about "$2,500 a year. In addition your taxes have gone up.

I was just quoting Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama. Any sane person knows health insurance costs are going up , and will continue to go through the roof.

When you buy a bag of potatoe chips....you're buying a half of bag of air.....open the bag and poof....you got a handful of chips......

Wasn't that long ago you could get a big bag of chips for $.99, now they are $2.50.
We buy very little "junk" food but a lot of people still seem to be able to afford it.

Agreed about core inflation (Government fake numbers) say we have no inflation. When Food, Fuel/Energy are taken out that may be slightly true. The fact that inflation is heading higher is no big surprise either figuring we been printing $ for years now.

My Electric Bill has almost tripled in the last 2 years, my Fuel bill has also tripled in last 3 years (in 08 we were paying same prices only Oil was 147bucks a bbl, now it is 93 bucks a bbl and 4bucks/gal.)

Speculation has driven these non-measured prices way up too...

Anyhow Obama care raised our healthcare costs almost 5K for a family plan over what it was 3 years ago the employer picked up 2/3's of that cost but not now as they cut my plan by cutting me from the work force... Guess come next spring I'll get TAXED for not being able to maintain that 5K family plan price...

You are exactly right. I just finished a project where I was working 12-15 hour days for months. The project was almost complete on a Friday night at 22:00 when I went to sleep because I had to get up at 0600 to drive for 10-11 hours the next morning on a long planned vacation. My part of the project was done but I was helping others. You should see my yard with the unmowed grass/weeds. We won't have a garden this year because I did not have time to put the seeds I bought in the ground. The tractor has not been used since last year nor has the DR Mower. I bought a new battery for the DR late last year and have had NO time to install the battery much less run the DR. I have a bunch of trees we had taken down last summer I need to turn into cord wood ASAP. I have to clean up the wood rounds I was going to turn into cord wood last year but it rotted because I did not have time to split it.

We eat very little processed foods. An odd bag of pretzels, cookies or potato chips from time to time. The little meat we eat is pork we buy on sale. Piggly Wiggly has a spring pig sale and we loaded up the freezer on bacon and pork loin that should last for months. We will start drying fruits soon I hope. If I have time from work.

Time is money. I am lucky, very lucky, to have a couple of jobs. Not sure how much longer I will have one job because of all of the job losses. IF I get a raise this year, not likely, it won't happen until the END of the year. Right now I don't even have time to make bread which we do eat and is expensive. Bread is the one "processed" food I eat more than others because I try to eat a sandwich for dinner as I cut back on calories. I really wanted one of those processed pies but no way was I paying for them but on the other hand it would take hours of time to make said pie and those are hours I simply do not have to spend. The money would be easier to spend than the time...
