Ammo

Any theories about why. 22lr is in such high demand? .380 was tough too for a while, but 22 seems to persist in scarcity.

because its the cheapest to shoot. its not a theory. all other ammo is marked up as well so people buy .22 when available

I was recently told by an employee where I buy my ammo that he read that the government is paying manufacturers not to keep up with demand, kind of like we hear about farmers being payed to let fields go fallow to keep wheat prices up. Not sure of its true but kind of scary if it is!

that's the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. don't believe dumb crap like that unless you have a good resource to back it up.

The issue is demand, people buying huge amounts. The cheaper and more common the caliber the scarcer.

The demand is high mostly because of hoarding and people buying up what comes in so they can resell it on the auction sites. With all the hysteria during the gun control scare, lots of people (new and old gun owners) decided that they weren't going to be caught short again and started stocking up, just in case. Then as mentioned above, all the survival groups preach about the virtues of having a large stash of 22LR. It's a snowball going downhill effect, the 22LRs started out cheap and as the shelf stock dwindled and people started making money on reselling, the new higher prices have become accepted as somewhat normal, so people are buying, even now. I've seen some outrageous bids being made on CCI Mini Mags, not asking prices, but bids!
Even our little rural Wal Mart has now got an "ammo buying line" set up each morning and they limit each buyer to 3 boxes of ammo. The same crowd shows up every morning about 5 AM just to secure their place in line to see if any ammo got shipped in the night before. There's a small gun shop just across the street from the Wal Mart and they've got just about any kind of ammo you want, if you feel like paying their price, and 90% of it came from the guys lining up at Wal Mart in the mornings.

I talked to a salesman from Federal and he swore that they were shoving their 22LRs out the door as fast as they could make them, that the government's purchases weren't having any effect on availability and that the only reason they could find was hoarding.

There must be a lot of people out there with some absolutely huge amounts of 22!

Tractorchores, powerpace, you guys are probably right, I just thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone else has heard anything similar. The shareholder part makes sense, they in vest to make money!

I think its clear the imbalance is demand side driven, I just wanted insights from folks who know the gun owner community better so I could see how it compares to my thinking.

No more than I actually get to practice, they will have to keep the prices jacked-up a long time to ever hurt me too badly.

well one thing about it, eventually the demand will slow down and these hoards of stock piles should become dirt cheap :cool2:

we can hope the bubble will burst some day, and hopefully soon.

People must stop buying to stock up if they don't need it.

They have been taking bids as always. Not bought any more ammo than normal. The bids are for option to buy in the future and not immediate purchase.
The Government Accounting Office has been directed by Congress to find out why and if the Bids requested are any different than past options.

If you go to any of the ammo manufacturers .com sites most will answer your questions about why ammo is in short supply. It "AIN'T the "Guvment".
It's the puchasers of 70,000,000 new weapons in the past few years.

Plus, most of those guns are autoloaders, which are notorious ammo wasters. I grew up shooting a bolt action Remington, which you can't even find on the shelves any more. Shoot up a few high cap magazines for a 10-22 and you can go through a brick in short order.
