I was curious if a 4720 could pull a 6row planter?

Thanks

I pull a mounted 2 row with my 2520 on level ground, may be able to pull 3 in a pull type. You may have to add some weight to it, but I think you would probably have the power on flat land.

Hiya,

In a word: No.

As mentioned before maybe in transport but a good rule of thumb for planters is 20 to 25hp per row depending on depth and soil type. 20 x 6 = 120HP, about double what the 4720 has. 15HP per row may get you by if your planting shallow and your soil is loose/sandy but you will be working the tractor hard. You need at least to be in the 5000 and better off in the 6000 series to pull a 6 row effectively.

My 2 cents

Tom

Are you telling me these new 42 row planters are being pulled by 840-1050hp tractors?

That's the problem with rules of thumb.

Asking if a tractor can pull a planter of a given size doesn't provide enough info to get a reasonably accurate answer, unless the matchup is heavily biased one way or the other. Conventional planter or no-till; dry, liquid, or no fertilizer; mounted, semi-mounted, or trailing? Who knows?

Back to the OP's question, my answer stands. It won't pull it in working conditions.

I pull the 2 row with the 2520, it will pull it at idle even and it only has 20 something horse. When we got our first 12 row planter in the mid 80's we pulled it with a 4040 which had maybe a bit over 100 horse maybe. That's back when we worked all our ground and even in the hills. It didn't have liquid fertilizer on it, but we did use the insecticide boxes. Now we have to pull the 12 row planters with 200+ hp tractors so they have enough hydraulic capacity to run the vacuum.

I would say no.

It's a compact utility, it is what it is. It isn't designed for that kind of duty, and it definitely does not have the weight or the horsepower for it. If that's what you want to do, I wouldn't try it with anything less than a 5085.

I'd say there are several factors that enter in. Is it notill? How fast you may want to plant is another concern but about the minimum I see would be 75 horsepower with the lessor weight of no notill planters on flats and non sandy soils.
