the set of forks I have they slide back and forth on a round solid bar. there is a lot of play in the forks. found some steel bushing that fit over round bar but would the welding hold if I welded to the top of forks? y

If the forks are made out of T-1 it might be best to figure out a way to mechanically hold the bushing in place. With set screws or something.
When I made the fork attachment for my tractor I used all mild steel, and box tube for the forks. I welded small clips to the back board so the forks stay in one place.

What problem does the extra play cause? Can you go to a larger bar?

I got this bar free from a cylinder repair shop because it was bent. It is about a half inch smaller in diameter than the hole in the forks and works good.
