Neighbor called the Law on me for shooting

If we could get supressors taken off the NFA list, we could all shoot alot quieter. I would be nice to break out the .22's and not have to yell at my son, because we are both wearing muffs. JC

Does anyone know why these were ever put on the list? It would be so nice to shoot quietly, not just for neighbors but for our own enjoyment of not having to where ear protection. I don't understand why they are a "problem". It would be nice if they just came with a gun when you buy it.

But, I'm sure there is some very good reasons we have to get special permission from our all knowing government...

It's just another paper trail process. I know several friends who have done it. You do have to get fingerprinted and pay a $200 fee. Takes 4-6 months to get done.

Should suppressors be regulated by the NFA?

Go to police station and ask for copy of the report. Then file it at home. Every time the same neighbor calls police, ask the police for a copy of the report. When you get a few in your file drawer, contact an attorney to file a harassment complaint against the neighbor.

Note: I am not an attorney, nor have ever I played one on tv or the big screen.

But....
Did you sleep at a Holiday Express last night?

I'm not sure that owning property, a gun, or a Harley with open pipes, gives anyone the right to pollute the space of others. How can that be rationalized? If there is a right to make noise, there must be a balancing right to have quiet IMO.

We have ordinances against loud vehicles, loud music, disturbing the peace and so forth. Obviously, the concept of a reasonable expectation of quiet exists in law. I know of no law that guarantees one the right to make as much noise as they want, any time they want.

Anyways, the Germans, who have about 1000 years more experience with living on top of each other than we do, take an interesting approach. Sunday is ruhe tag (quiet day), and during the week, the early afternoon hours are ruhe stunden (quiet hours) in residential areas. That means you don't make noise that reaches the neighbors during those quiet periods.

My neighbors have never complained about my chainsaw and most likely wouldn't. The issue to me is, do I respect there rights to enjoyment enough to not give them a reason to complain? That's where thoughtfulness toward others is worth more than any ordinance.

Personally based on your rules chainsaws should be outlawed

Fair question. But let's not re-frame the discussion to "I am sensitive to noise." I am appreciative of natural surroundings which excessive noise renders impossible to obtain or enjoy. :D

There is medical evidence showing noise can be a health detriment. No one ever got sick from a lack of noise.

Show me the constitutional right to make all the noise you want when it impinges on the pursuit of happiness of others, especially when that is happening on property they own or rent.

There has to be a balance obviously and that is what makes it difficult.

Random RF noise must be difficult to deal with for HAMs, and the available spectrum, like the land area for people, isn't getting any larger. At least you have the regulation of the FCC to enforce stray or too strong signals. Good luck with that.

The constitution does not set your rights, it only limits the rights the federal government can take from us

In the USA, those Sunday laws are called "Blue Laws." -- Religion-based and unconstitutional. It means I can't go out and mow my lawn or run the chainsaw on Sunday because someone might find it offensive. I'm not anti-religion. In fact, quite the opposite, as an Adventist I don't work or mow my lawn, etc. on Saturday Sabbath, but don't expect others to do the same because they don't have the same convictions. A Muslim would have Friday as his/her "Ruhetag."

It always irked me when I visited my grandparents in Switzerland when I was a kid when they said, "no, we don't do this or that on Sunday", or "no, we have to dress like this on Sunday", etc.

Sure a neighborhood can make ordinances about "quiet time", say from 10 pm to 6 am everyday, or whatever. But you can't make them religion-based in the USA. :)

He would not have gotten my ID.

If you wouldn't have given up your ID, it's a pretty simple process to figure out who you are. There are TONS of resources that can be quickly accessed to get that info. It's just easier to ask for it and have it then and there.

It's far better to be cooperative with law enforcement when they are investigating an incident like this. Believe it or not, LE hates dealing with stupid complainers like this. Be cooperative with them and they may end up filing charges against your neighbor for something applicable in the future. Be difficult with LE and they will just continue to allow your neighbor to annoy you.

Be part of the solution....not part of the problem.

The cop must make sure he's talking to the actual owner of the property..

Nice idea, however the real story is that the LEO checks any ID he gets in his hands for warrants. If he gets a hit, he makes an arrest. Another feather in his hat. The thing is LEOs scare people into providing them with their IDs, even in situations that do not warrant this "search".
