I've been fighting with some pretty ancient sickle mowers over the course of the summer. As it happens, a friend of mine is selling his farm and he sold me his John Deere 1209 mower conditioner. I wasn't exactly looking to spend any more money, but he really gifted it to me for a mere $500! I just couldn't pass that up!

After spending a day last weekend going over everything with a fine toothed comb, I decided to give it a pilot run this evening.

One word... Nice!

I think I'll enjoy this.

Joe

No worries there, I have the manual. Besides, after rebuilding two other sickle mowers, replacing sections and guards should be no big deal.

Not sure which model it is, but some JDs have an issue with the gear box not staying tight to the frame IIRC. Keep and eye on it, may not be prone to that model, but I've known a few friends who had issues with theirs.

Looks like a good rig.

Any JD cycle Mo-Co is susceptible for wobblebox mounting bracket failure from continued operating with loose mounting bolts or too much slack in drive arm that attaches to wobblebox shaft.

Thanks for the heads up!

I just got a Hesston this year, beats the side arm mower for sure, I am real happy with mine so far, done about 12 acres with it so far.

Actually, I would have preferred either a Hesston or New Holland, but the price for the JD was right, (You don't hear that too often!) so I jumped before it went somewhere else. Which model do you have? Are you cutting alfalfa or grass?

IMHO the 1207/1209 & 1217/1219 were some of JD's best attempts at building a hay cutter.
