Lightening Killed My TV

Lightning fried one of three HDMI circuits in our sony. We only use two of them at a time so all it cost us was a service call from the repair guy.

Our tv was protected by a UPS that was protected by a surge protector that was protected by a whole house surge protector at the meter. I guess it was just our turn.

One or the other, dont run multiple surge suppression in series..

Our pump controller got fried about five weeks ago. The third one in four years. It's $100 a pop. The same strike got my modem and router. The phone company replaced the modem, but the router was on me. That was another $60. The good thing is for the same $ as I paid for the last one, this one has three bands. A secure one for us, another secure one for heavy data use, and an open guest band. I think I'm going to spend another $60 to have faster speeds at work.

We have been lucky with TV's. There are eight of them hooked to five receivers in the house and another antenna TV in the barn. We haven't lost a TV to lighting in years. But when one dies of old age, I always take out the speakers. The compact size is good for boats or tractors. The quality of TV speakers are much better than they used to be.

We had a lightening strike back in 2010. Took out my computer (through a UPS), all the phones in the house, DSL modem, router, Ethernet switches, HP color laser printer, 55" Samsung LCD TV, Blu-Ray player, Dish box, Onkyo A/V receiver, several alarm clocks, Microwave, A/C, sump pump and back-up sump pump, and the Garage Door Openers on the attached garage (didn't affect the GDOs on the barn on the same electric meter just different main disconnect). Now here is the real kicker, it also got our Suburban sitting in the garage. The lightening went from the GDOs down to the OnStar antennae and burnt the Body Control Module out. We ended up having to have to insurance claims because at first the dealership was saying they thought they would have to total the Suburban because of so much damage and it was probably going to start at about $20k to fix it. Ended up fixing it for only about $1500 though.

Yesterday at work I noticed a wrecker in the parking lot, so I walked out to see what was going on. A lady had a flat tire and had called for it to be changed. There was no hole to be seen in the tire, but the lady said, "lightning hit the car last night. Do you think that could have done it?" She showed us burn marks along the fender above the tire, and some along the trunk. She said that all the warning lights had been on the whole time she drove from Wakulla County to Tallahassee to a hair appointment for her little girl. [the event yesterday was related to the Miss NW Florida pageant] Then she drove to Blountstown with all her warning lights lit up. That was an hour and half at highway speed, driving a car that has no telling how much damage, but the little beauty queen made her appointment.

You have got to have your priorities in the correct order. Beauty Salon appointments must be kept.

One of the worst electrical storms I have ever been in was while staying at the Radisson Hotel on Indialantic Beach in Florida.

Okay, got the back off and found the fuse, no problem. But, I cannot figure out how to get this fuse out! It looks just like the old car fuses used to except this one is ceramic instead of glass. Those were just held in with a metal clip. This one appears to have a cap on either end. Wires come from each cap and are soldered to the board. The fuse (along with its silver ends) will turn within these caps but I cannot pry the caps away from the fuse itself. I'm sure to break the soldered wires off if I pry any harder. The marks on the fuse are from my pliers. See pic below. Anyone know how to get this fuse out?

You have to unsolder from the bottom of the circuit board and solder in the replacement. I'd suggest checking it out with an ohmmeter before you dig into it or take it to the shop. If the fuse is open you might get by with just replacing it.

I think you are right. I can solder, but poorly at best. I just pulled the whole power board out and I'm going to get my wife to take it to a local repair shop and see if they will test and/or replace the fuse. I do not own a ohmmeter.........electricity is pure voodoo to me. I also know a guy who repairs radios who might be able to do it. Don't know what the labor rates are for this kind of work but not going to spend more than $20 bucks or so to fool with this fuse.

[rant] Why on earth would they solder in a fuse? On all the YouTube DIY videos the fuses are held in by a little clip just like you'd expect. Not this one. Drives me nuts. I guess having someone in SE Asia....or maybe a robot... solder it in is cheaper than the typical clips in deal. [end rant]

Our tv at the farm got zapped last fall,Mitsubishi 42 inch three years old cost about $2500. Priced new Samsung and LG 50 inchers at about $550. I did a Google search and found the circuit boards on shopjimmy.com. My brother owns the tv and all three boards were $154, so we decided to take a gamble. I ordered them, they were rebuilt boards. I had to swap the main filter caps and repair a crack on the power supply board. It did not fix the problem(original PS may have been good), so I installed the tuner/processor board and the tv came back to life. I was in TV repair for years and gave it up when the flat screen lcd ones came out.(I'm an analog man in a digital world!:irked:) I remembered that the processor board and power supply have to communicate with each other to startup the set. Sometimes the processor can be bad and it will look like a power issue. I caught the lightning strike on my video surveillance cameras. It hit the satellite dish at my neighbor's house across the street, but they received no damage. I figure a thin leader hit our dish which I don't think is properly grounded. There are some informative videos on YouTube on LCD TV repair. I would recommend NOT attempting to repair one without an isolation transformer and a good knowledge of electronics and electrical safety.
