Hello All,

New to the forum and to owning a tractor, from rural New South Wales Australia.

I purchased a Ford 5000 from a local farmer on a spur of the moment buy, it just looked "Old School Cool" in great condition and well looked after. I haven't any real use for it so it sits in the shed gathering cobwebs with a start up every few days. I have one problem and that it only starts occasionally with no apparent reason for starting one day to not starting the next. Each time I have done the start up I have followed the same procedure the next time without the tractor kicking over.

Unsure of the age, I haven't been able to ID the codes. All I can find are raised numbers and letters (none engraved)

Being a diesel I would assume it has some form of pre-heat/glow plug but as to how that is activated I have no clue. Other threads I have read have the key switch turning anti-clockwise but my key switch will only turn clockwise. Two red-lights come on (battery indicator and what looks like an oil droplet so assuming oil pressure???) Even without a preheat system after cranking for a bit I would think it would kick over anyhow.

It has the SOS with 2 reverse and 10 forward. Inline injectors.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

if you turnt he key and it cranks but won't start.. ensure you have the fuel stop cable all the way in.

when cranking and not starting.. is it making smoke?

look on the bellhousing flat aft of the starter.. will have date code, model id and sn.

model id will begin with a 5 if pre 4-68 or a E if later. louvered tin is another clue for an early machine.

sn prefixes could be C or B or A c= us, B = basildon england, A= antwerp belgium

Hi Soundguy,

Thanks for writing, The cable is in, the problem is it starts one day and not the next with no rhyme or reason. I've been methodical in doing the same start up procedure each time it has kicked over and running. When it hasn't kicked over I leave it for a bit, come back an hour or two later and it would start (not always the case though). This is why I'm sensing I am missing something.

As to the numbers. I did find an engraved code/number Looks like a C followed by 56492 G15 There is also the raised code C5NE 60

Hope the images work

Try holding the key halfway between the on and start position, may give you preheat. Also on the injector pump it may have a button which you can press in. It is an access fuel for cold starting.

Isn't 8 great mate. QLDer

Tractor looks very nice. Any chance you could have the farmer you bought it from stop by and show you the startup procedure?
