F525 return to neutral

I have a 1995 or so JD F525 front mount mower. For some time, the foot pedal has returns slowly to the neutral position when I want to stop. In fact, when I want to back up, I need to lift up on the forward pedal with my foot to go in reverse. This year, I finally decided that I would look into the problem. There is a shock absorber on the forward/reverse linkage on the left side of the engine/trans, by the battery. Could this be the problem? The cable that runs from the pedal seems to move freely. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I hate to just start replacing parts hoping to find out which one is the problem.

Sheepman, It sounds like your talking about a pneumatic dampner which is just there to keep you from making quick movements with your foot.. The problem is probably just a slight adjustment on the hydro lever which should or could be a threaded rod with a jam nut situation connected to the pedals... I don't own one but have checked one out some time ago, This is all from memory

Yes, I think you are right about the dampner. Turns out the cable is the culprit. A flange (for lack of a better term) on the end of the cable was broken. Thanks for the info.

My JD F525 wants to move in reverse while in neutral and has virtually no forward. Mower worked fine, stopped for break, restarted and had this problem. Have completely cleaned and checked for loose/broken stuff. Any ideas?? Jim

Ever solve this? My F525 was working fine and simply stopped going forward. Reverse works perfectly, but no forward. Linkage, oil, brake, freewheel all working normally.
