Want your cooler to do a little better in the heat? Check to see if the lid is insulated. If it is not drill a few holes (I drill them in the bottom of the lid) fill it up with expanding foam. I go through coolers on job sites, boat, and what not. Usually take throw away ones from family and friends (I'm rough on them) and this trick really ups their performance.

Thanks! In the Texas heat, it is always good to get any extra ways to beat it that we can.

Interesting, never hear that before. I am going to check out ours and see if the lid is insulated - somehow I am betting you are right.
thanks for the tip

It really does help. I learned this from the FIL, he picked up a cooler along the interstate with some rash on the lid. He filled it with foam and it was the best cooler, kept ice for days. Great tip.

Throwing a damp towel over the cooler will almost double the length of time for your ice to melt.

Makes good sense, Thanks!
I'm sure the adhesion when once dried helps to reinforce the lids, Know anyone who sits on their coolers,;)

Summer time we keep a Cooler in the trunk and a 2 liter bottle full frozen in the fridge for when we go shopping. Toss the meats and cheese/eggs etc into there and the two liter frozen bottle keeps em all cool for ride home. (15 or 20 min on road in HOT Trunk can half cook your steaks...)

Also I lined the underside of mine with a section of the foil bubble bubble foil insulation from radiant heat barrier which makes that cooler stay cold days longer.

I had not thought about hollow lids or sides on a cooler but could see that on some of them for sure. I have 4 coolers mostly OLD ones but I think the newest one is probably hollow and says do not set
