I'm not saying it doesn't work, but I'm kind of puzzled by the physics. I would have thought that a contained air pocket would be a better insulator than any type of filling.

Insulation is to SLOW DOWN heat transfer. If it is just AIR then there is little to slow the heat transfer. If it is FOAM then it is billions of little air bubbles separated by foam that keeps air and heat from migrating as easy. Fiberglass does the same thing in a hollow cavity in your wall it basically slows the heat transfer only.

Cmon now... Why would you insulate your walls, attic, floors etc if a contained air pocket would be better :D

You insulate the wals to keep the air from moving. moving air does not insulate (why you have vents in your attic). Fiberglass only slows the air down. Foam traps it. Drilling holes in your sealed, air insulated top to add foam reduced the insulating value.

Walls and ceilings are not a contained air pocket. I understand how insulation works. The thicker the insulation, the better it works because more air is trapped in the batt. But the use of batts rather than air pillows is probably just a matter or practicality.

We also do this or old thermos' s that stop holding heat. When the vacuum is gone they are inefficient a small hole in the bottom and some foam although it makes them heavier is keeps stuff hot longer.

I'm sure the adhesion when once dried helps to reinforce the lids, Know anyone who sits on their coolers,;)

I have a couple of mine that I sit on. They aren't new coolers. Like everything else, i doubt the new coolers would be as tough or forgiving.
