Case 680E
I recently purchased a Case 680E. It works fine, but has some hydraulic leaks. One is the seal on the loader lift cylinder. I pulled it and am attempting to remove the rod. I removed hoses and nut and am attempting to pull out the rod, but it won't move. The cylinder worked fine on the loader 30 minutes prior to removal. I attempted to pull it out with a cumberlong, but no progress. Any suggestions?

Not knowing exactly what you mean I have to ask what may be fairly simple questions first. In what way are you trying to remove the rod? Did you remove the gland nut already? Or is the rod just not moving in the cylinder without hydraulic force? Is the rod bent keeping it from being able to move in the cylinder with the gland still in place?

Gland nut is removed. The rod does not appear to be bent when used on loader. I am attempting to pull the rod out ot repair the seals.

Hmmmm, normally a come-along would do the trick. I've used air pressure in cases like this, but one has to be careful. Even as heavy as those rods are they have no problem becoming high speed projectiles. Ask me how I know, lol.

I don't really want to try the air pressure...I will take your word for it. Maybe I will hook the hoses back up and push it out with hydraulic fluid.

I've done that too, in places where the hydraulic oil mess wasn't gonna get me in trouble.

I am not old enough yet to use air pressure on any cylinder strip job!
Use low volume hi-press power pack and force it out slowly over a bucket to catch the spill.
Try to bleed out most of the air before pressurising.

Scott,

the case piston consists of two sets of v packing with a plastic machined spacer.....what you are experiencing is the plastic spacer under usage gets swollen in the hyd oil over time

When you get a new seal kit it "should" come with the v pkg piston set with this new spacer as part of the kit......if they don't come with the kit you can turn them on a lathe and take off about .010 to .015" off the dia......second thought if someone tries to sell you a kit without that whole set (w/o the spacer), then they prolly have the wrong parts....those case piston sets are made specifically for case

use a comealong to remove rod assy, it will come easier than you think....if you resort to banging it out with a BFH (big friggin hammer) use a junk bar in the eye and don't hit the rod accidently

Do not use air pressure unless you have your insurance paid up in full (life and/or health)

Thanks for the help. I tried a come-along without success, but the hydraulic power pack worked great (and 1.5 gal of hydraulic fluid). BFH and wood block was needed to get the gland nut all the way off.
Thanks againfor your help.
