Justifying a cost of a diesel

I have an electric car that cost $8500 after all factory and government rebates. I pay about $20 in electricity to go 1,000 miles each month.

I also have a 2500HD Silverado with 8.1L engine. I was getting less than 10mpg, not towing anything. With maintenance, I was paying $0.53 per mile. Doesn't include depreciation. So, I'm saving $500 per month on commuting, and I still have the truck for when I need to tow my trailer. When I don't need it, I have it in storage and don't pay insurance. I can take it out of storage for a day or two with a phone call or email.

12 more months and the car will have paid for itself.

Power? My Silverado can do 60 mph over Mt Hood towing my 7500 lb trailer. Mileage drops to 7 mpg though.

What kind of electric car do you have? A friend has a Nissan Leaf and he loves it! He was driving a Jeep to work, but now he drives the Leaf and leaves the Jeep at home with his wife, who is a stay at home mom. He's saving money with his new Leaf. Not only does he not have to buy gas, but he never has to change the oil either.

Yep. No maintenance for the first 25000 miles. Then you have to change out a quart of gearbox oil.

75000 mile warranty on the main battery. I'll sell it before then. $12000 to replace the battery is a big ouch. More than what I paid for the car new.

I have a Think City. Company name is Think. Model is City.

Diesel is currently $3.74 here and gas is $3.48.
To go 400 on gas would cost me $174
On diesel that same trip would cost me $106

I'll give you an example, after that you just smile for that diesel price and cost of driving :)

I live in northern europe, where distances are long and cars are easy way for the government to collect taxes.
If I buy a new car, I have to pay emissions based tax for the car, more it consumes, more I pay.

Example: Toyota Hilux Double cab pickup truck with 3.0 Diesel engine.
Price of the new car is 48000 USD. In addition, one has to pay emissions based tax of 29380 USD.

Then, one needs to pay yearly vehicle tax, which is also emissions based. Diesel is cheaper here than gas, so one needs to pay Diesel-tax too. These combined could be about 1000 USD per year for that example car.
And the price of the gas is about 8 USD per gallon and price of the dielsel is about 7.5 USD per gallon.

There is plenty of room to raise cost of ownership and cost of diesel where you live :)

I just got back last Saturday. 6.0 pulling a boat got 10-11mpg and the 2 new Duramax with us got about 15 and one had double the weight of our boat.

6.0 Ford or 6.0 GM? I am guessing GM since I have had two 6.0 Fords, a 04 anf a 06, and both got better mpg with a load then my 05 Dmax.

I dont agree with a 24 valve getting less MPG than a 12 valve. I have a 2006 common rail with a smarty box downloader. I am getting 21 MPG around town and that is hammering on it driving it like I stole it. That is doing the math not going by the overhead computer. If I run #2 home heating fuel in it I get even better. Diesels really like the extra sulfur. But don't run # 2 fuel on anything newer than 2006 the fuel system is not designed for that. I like to add some 2 stroke oil to the fuel every tank. It keeps the injectors well lubed and quiet.

I do agree with the power of diesel trucks. They go up a hill like they are not even there. Is it worth it for you to spend the extra money?? Well, that depends on how many miles you put on in a year and how long you plan to keep the truck. If you drive them into the ground then by all means you will get that 7-8 K back and then some. All trucks of all brands have their little issues no matter what you buy. But you won't be sorry no matter what diesel you choose especially when you have a trailer on the back and hit that first hill, you will be amazed.

Maybe you and I can trade 06's. Mine sure as **** won't get 21 in town, it takes an extreme amount of patience just to get it to 21 at all. However, I never expected my leveled, 7,820lb, 4x4, QCLB, 4.10 geared pickup to get amazing mileage unladen. That being said, I'm a huge fan of connecting 9,000lb to the back of it, being able to merge safely and make it to my destination when I'm in a hurry following the 75mph posted speed limit without thinking twice about the pickup struggling. Along with that, 75mph pulling a 25' GN through rolling hills doesn't yield amazing fuel economy, I come in around 9.5ish on trips like that.
