Hi guys new to form, trying to decide how much pto hr power to look for. I understand Hp is inportant but am under the impression that PTO hp is the most inportant. I want to pull a 6' shredder in light brush and tall grass. Thanks for all the help

5-7 hp/ft seems to be the general consensuses around here. For light work I'd say closer to 5'.

BTW, Welcome!

You get a A+ and a smiley face sticker for using the correct forum to post your first question.

When you refer to a "shredder" do you mean a Flail Shredder"?, which is the proper term.

Not an everyday occurrence.

I assumed he meant a rotary cutter, brush cutter, brush hog, bush hog, slasher or what ever else. Proper term?

Leonz, different places have different names for the same thing. "Slasher" a common name for any kind of rough cut mower in Australia, they use "Shredder" in TX to mean the same thing.
There are 92 ads in the Farm and Garden section of the Houston Craigslist advertising "Shredders" and of those, only 2 also contain the word flail (houston farm & garden - all classifieds "shredder" - craigslist).

Ditto on the 5-7HP suggestion.

But also equally important is the weight of the cutter vs the weight of the tractor.

Alot of modern compact tractors are high HP in a small and light package.

its not uncommon to find 30 PTO HP tractors in the 2000lb range. using the 5hp/ft rule, one would think that a 6' cutter would be okay. And a lighter duty one might. But no way would a HD 6' cutter that weighs 1100-1200lbs work on a 2000lb tractor. if you didnt have a loader, the front end would raise instead of the cutter. And the tail would be wagging the dog as it is called.

OTOH, there are 30PTO HP tractors that weigh as much as 4000lbs.

So HP isnt the whole story. Look at the weight of the tractor and cutter also to get a good match.

In Tx we just call it a shredder an most everyone knows what your talking about. To look it up under
attachment web sites you would be looking for a rotary cutter. I'm leaning on purchasing a Kioti DK45se Hst
with loader to pull a Mohawk Brave 6 Cutter.
