I live in a large neighborhood in San Diego and I have an Acre of land. I found an old well on my property and would like to install a shallow well system to water the lawn and have enough pressure for a faucet if needed. However sound would be the problem. Most of my property is behind my house and I have some neighbors that are close to me. Is there a such thing as a silent pump system (cost is no issue)???. Or what would be the quietest pump system. By the way, I checked the old well and it is shallow.

You could go with a submersible, you'd never hear it...or go with an external Goulds style jet pump in a small building. Your neighbors may hear it, but I can't imagine it would bother anyone. Mine is in the basement and I can barely hear it run.

Put it in a noise insulating case that still allows cooling air through. Disguise it as a garden shed?
Get the water checked for whatever. You may be putting out something you will not like on the lawn.

They will hear it...If they listen. Is there some law against having the shallow well? I found one on mine, Snaked a 1.5" plastic pipe down the steel 2" pipe. Sealed it where it comes out of the ground. 28' deep. put on a simple shallow well pump with attached air pressure tank. With Check Valve so you dont have to prime all the time. Mine has a Stainless Steel Sand point.. I pump a ton of water and there is no law against it as long as it's not within 100' of the septic tank.

To have a faucet that is "live", yes a pressure tank would be needed. However, if it is only used for the irrigation, a "pump-start" system will work just fine and does not need any tank.

A 1/2 hp jet pump is really not very loud. To use a submersible pump, you need to know the size of the well (2", 3", 4") and get the correct size pump and drop pipe.
If you do go with a submersible, I would suggest a "3 wire" over a "2-wire" system since the controller is above ground and does not require pulling the pump if lightning takes it out.

A submersible pump is nearly silent. A jet pump is a little louder but nothing near an air compressor noise level even. Having it inside a building would make it very hard to hear.
