Picked up this guy from a friend's grandfather for $250. It was sitting in shed for past few years and used at his farm in previous years. Odometer shows about 790 miles and 650ish hours. Mechanic buddy is going through it and fixing what needs to be fixed. So far, only about $70 in parts. Would like some new headlights, but have been quoted $160 or so for a simple fog light type thing. It is a rectangular light with replaceable bulb (I think I used to have similar fog lights on my old Jeep Cherokee). No way they can be that much money, but all I can find. Trying to just reseal lens now and make it work. Any ideas?

Question...I have read about the fuel shutoff/reservoir switch going bad and cylinder could fill with fuel (read on the www) Anyone have any issues with this? Also, what I've read is that this is a reliable machine made to work. I'm thinking the guy used it a lot to tow his boats around and other stuff on farm as rear suspension (shocks/coils) are all the way jacked to compensate for heavier load on rear.

There are several good used ones on eBay for $40/pair. Try that. I use eBay often for quad parts.

It looks like you have a KQ 300. I worked on one of those once. It has a very useful dual range final drive,
which comes in handy. The battery is hidden under the front rack, beneath that black hatch. Inconvenient.
The unit I worked on had a bird nest in there!

Anyway, I have never had an ATV overflow its carb into the cylinder, tho it is remotely possible. The float bowl
has an overflow tube to keep that from happening. It did happen once to a JD lawn tractor I was given.

Anyway, looks like a good find.

Good solid machine. I have a 2001 King Quad which has been a real work horse. Rather than dual range like most it has three ranges. I guess the battery cover is a little bit of a pain to remove (4 screws) but once the original wet battery finally failed I just replaced it with a sealed one.

Hi
I have had the same for almost 20 years ,great machine
YES HAVE HAD PROBLEM WITH FUEL DRAINING INTO TRANSMISSION
Dealer told me that the fuel should be shut off when not in use
I haven't had any problem since I started doing this, but did ruin starter brushes because of gas in oil and it was hard to start, flooded.
I connected a # 12 wire to the battery post so I could charge without removing cover ,makes life easy

The AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries are nice, but they still get ruined if fully discharged for a while. Or
overcharged, for that matter. I wonder if anyone has tried one of the cool new Li-ion batteries. They
weigh only 1/8 what the Pb-acid batteries weigh, and should be much more tolerant of full discharge. They
are down to $150 or so, if you can stomach that. But, I hear of dealers selling conventional m/c batteries
for $100. They are coming. I saw one at a store the other day. Nice.

With the KingQuad, opening the battery hatch also requires removal of the front rack, and anything on it.
Strange.

As for the fuel petcock.....turning it off and on every time you use the ATV is asking a lot. Most folks
do not do that. I don't. You can replace your petcock with one that many motorcycles use; one that is
vacuum-controlled. I also replace leaky petcocks with new aftermarket units. Cheap and very effective.
