At my previous home, I had a 40' x 12' deck. My son walked out on the deck one day and got stung by several Yellow Jackets.
We had a large gas grill sitting right in the middle of the deck, up against the house. The swarm was coming from the grill. Every time someone stepped on the deck, the vibrations set off the swarm. No good way to spray, etc. Since it was pushed completely back against the wall, any attempt to snag the handle with a rope from the roof was not going to work. Being a bit of a stubborn sort, I refused to allow the Yellow Jackets to commandeer the entire deck.
I noticed there was a small hole in the side of the grill intended for a rotisserie. I had a 20' section of 1/2" copper pipe left over from the construction. I stood at the end of the deck and managed to get that pipe in the hole in the side of the grill. Retrieved some Bottle Rockets left over from July 4. I put a rocket in the end of the pipe, lit it off, and of course it shot up the pipe into the grill where it exploded with a loud "thump". About 2 of the critters made it out alive.
My sons were young at the time, and they thought it was great sport. They shot their entire supply of bottle rockets into the grill. Once the bombardment was over, I opened the grill and found a huge nest with a few live, but obviously very dazed bees.
