Do you still have a "land" telephone line?

I have ATT DSL and get 1.3 up and .3 down.

Had trouble getting DSL... I live in the city and ATT said I was too far away from the Central Office.

The following year I got an advertisement for ATT DSL now in my neighborhood.

I signed up and the first tech said I was not in range... I called ATT and read them what there ad said and their was no disclaimers.

ATT had to run a new line about 12 poles away...

An added benefit was the poor landline connection I had always compained about was now golden...

When I built my house the phone company wanted me to use 4" conduit for the underground section. I laughed and said no. Sat internet sucks and I was thinking of going with DSL but then we got a 4g cell tower close by and internet through it is just as fast and I didn't need to deal with putting in 3000' of land line. Cell phones are not perfect but they are portable and now with the smart phones you can do so much more when not home, things like find phone numbers, check the weather, and of course call people that a land line really isn't needed. As for 911 service, as long as you have a line you have 911 service, by law the phone company can't shut it off.

Good luck with that! I have Comcast and tested at 26.69 and 6.78. Not lightening speed but my machine is so fast it gets it done in a hurry.

I just tested my highspeed internet speeds from TimeWarner and I did get over 12mb download but just about 1mb upload.
I was wondering about the upload speeds for DSL because I was thinking of switching over because my tripleplay service is over $130mo.

The speed of DSL is dependent on how far you are from the C/O and the quality of the line. Old school items they used to put on the lines (coils and such) drop the quality. I switched from Comcast to DSL years ago because it was a constant 4mb down and 1mb up. Comcrap was higher down but only 384k up and when people would get home from work the shared lines would crawl. The DSL worked fine and was steady but as soon as FIOS came to my street I was all over it. A constant 30/15 is very nice to have. There can be a dozen devices or more running on my line at any given time and I can't ever tell.

The central office serving work is two blocks away... the problem is it is the same central office that serves my home and the cable run in miles away over 60 year old poles/lines.

Don't expect anything to improve... 1.3 is the max I can expect with DSL in Oakland CA and no DSL/Comcast outside Olympia WA.

Around here 20/5 FIOS costs considerably more than Comcast and I constantly get 25-30/5-7. If I want to pay astronomical prices for 50/5 I can have super fast down load, but upload is still 5. I can pay about 1/3 more to comcast and get double my current speed. I see no advantage here to pay more or Fios.

When I switched, Comcast was not up to the speeds they are now. This is maybe 5 to 7 years ago, they obviously made some upgrades but I hate their advertising. I get mail every other day from them. I started FIOS at 5/2 and I think for like $30, I may be off on my numbers a bit. Then they offered the 30/15 for $40 and I jumped at it. It's been that price for 2 or 3 years. Comcast is more here except for the try it price. The slow upload speeds is what turned me off. Took forever to send pictures and trying to do some work from home was blah. Who cares if the download speed is 1000mb if the upload is 384k, I needed both directions.
