Do you still have a "land" telephone line?

We just took off our landline phone service. But, we still use the landline for DSL. The cost for the phone kept creeping up a little bit every month till I could stand it no longer. We now use cell phones and VOIP.

I have to ask you guys who have high speed DSL, do any of you have IP cameras ? And how do they work on DSL?

AT&T offers M-Cell that you install at your home and it connects via your router to the internet and your calls go through it. It also has GPS and gives your location for any 911 calls. Works like a champ and we got it for free due to poor cell servicde in our area.

Pixguy... I have 4 of the newer Swann (Hikvision) IP cameras hardwired to the NVR on CAT5e (excellent 2MP cams, quirky software). I have a microwave ISP with about 2.5 mbps upload speed, and a Netgear router for home.

At home they are flawless, since they are on my own network. From work and via the iPhone app, I found I need to use the substream, at which they are quite adequate, but with reduced resolution. I can browse to the NVR no problem, but it takes a long time for a mainstream picture to build, and 4 cams at once takes forever to load, and longer to update.

I thought about contacting the ISP to see about bumping up the upload speed only, but I am not willing to pay much more for that. Being still new to IP cams, I may have missed a trick or two, but that's how it appears at the moment. What are your upload connection speed test results?

we got rid of the land line over 1 year ago. i only kept it for the fax line use in my business, but ive totally switched over to either snail mail or e-mail.

id say 90% of my billing/estimates are emailed at this time.

The phone lines were eating away $70/month for very random use.

oh, did i say, i dont miss not getting interrupted at dinner time from telemarketers either.

Yep, we still have a land line, both for high speed DSL and for my wife to talk to you sister in another state every day.:) I couldn't afford the cell phone cost of that. I have an AT&T Go Phone that costs me about $9 a month (including tax) and use it so seldom that my account balance just keeps growing. But our daughters, sons-in-law, and grandson all have a T-Mobile family plan and one of the daughters put my wife on that, so I have no idea what she pays for it, but I said something to her recently about the number of minutes they use and she said they're on an unlimited plan.:confused3:

the verizon plan i have...friends and family... allow 10 frequent non verizon phone numbers to be added that dont add to my minutes used. plus, i can call any other verizon number for free (no minutes). i have a 1000 minute plan and use at most 600 min per month.

all this for around 60/month 3 phones. i dont want to change anything, cause then they swap the entire phone plan to something that would be more expensive and have less free stuff.

oh, and weekends and nights are free too.

I just tested my highspeed internet speeds from TimeWarner and I did get over 12mb download but just about 1mb upload.
I was wondering about the upload speeds for DSL because I was thinking of switching over because my tripleplay service is over $130mo.

I just ran the speed test on my DSL and it showed 10.62 Mbps download and .76 Mbps upload, and that's about what it does every time I run a speed test.

Thanks Bird, wondering if that's the norm though throughout the country.

It really all depends on the provider and the plan (as well as signal, in my case). There are way faster upload connections in some systems. Mine is still running about 2.7 on the upload side, and the results are very consistent.

Ookla Speedtest - My Results

When I had Cox cable at the old house in the city, speeds were blazing... if you don't pay for the premium speed, they throttle how much of it you can use. Here, I am pretty happy with the microwave system, and could have more if I wanted to pay for it.

The IP cameras will work remotely as well as that upload number dictates. The substream works great, but the main is very choppy, so I only use the high resolution at home in my own network.
