When I was younger, many of the local farmers used to wear a high topped work shoe with a smooth sole. It had a round topped toe, that I liked because weld spatter rolled off. The part I liked best though, was the smooth sole, it seemed to be made from some kind of rubber/cork composite material. Mud and manure were easy to scrape from these shoes, compared to the lug soled work shoes availabe today. I can only guess that safety issues have made the manufacturers cease production of these shoes. The pair I had, was probably sold under the Gerogia Giant label. If anyone knows a source for smooth soled work shoes, please let me know.

Wolverine durashocks have a nice soul...not completely smooth, but they don't track so much stuff into the house..

I think what you are looking for are these Redwing work boots. They have a smooth cork-rubber sole.

They can be hard to find.

Find a Redwing Boot store and ask for Model 1178. They may have to order them. I've had several pair and they last a long time and are comfortable. Also, that sole is very quiet when walking on almost any type floor.

Those Redwings have the right soul but, what I had in mind was a high topped lace up shoe. Probably 6" high.

You should probably still check Redwing. they are the only ones I know that still use that type sole. Plus they are made in America. The 1178's are anyway.

I know it sounds a bit wasteful, but you might be able to replace the soles with the cork type. I'd check with local shoe repair place/cobbler to see if they can put the soles you want on your shoes. Shoe repair shops are few and far between these days, but they do still exist. What's the old saying? A shoe repairman can heel your shoes and save their soles.:D

It's a very good idea if you really want a particular kind of sole and the shop can do it. I had a pair of dress boots that got to looking a little rogh and had holes worn through the leather soles. The maker refused to resole them the third time. I took them to a local shop and had a rubber 'work sole' put on them. It's not smooth but it's a good sole and the boots are still usable.

Maybe the boot you're talking about is the Redwing super sole. I've worn em for years and one of the biggest reasons I like em is because they don't track mud. I just bought a pair recently and they're about $140. They'll last a long time though. They are a dark brown smooth round toe boot that laces up. I've been wearing this same model of boot since the early 80s and the only thing that's changed is the laces.

I have a pair of cowboy boots (Gifted to me by my ex-wife in '89) they are on their 3rd set of heel/soles. The Uppers are made from Doe Skin (Noconas Brand) & I've always cared for them using black Kiwi shoe polish and a bit of Wolverines Softener a couple times a year. They have Leather Soles & Rubber Heel & feel about like moccasins on my feet... They are however probably not going to get new sole as my feet have stretched them so much at the wide ball of my foot the ole Doe Skin is about paper thin... I went to same place for the 2nd and 3rd resole in Ashland Ohio, he (Cobbler) is gone now and when he did them the 3rd time he smiled and said no one takes care of good boots or shoes anymore. He charged me 20.00 or 30bucks the first time and 5 bucks the 2nd time he repaired them. His shop closed probably 10 years ago now as when I was in there last time he was cleaning out for retirement...

Luckily around here we have some Amish Craftsmen that will also do this type of work.

Many thanks to everyone for your replies. The Redwing at this url

looks like the pair I had in the 70's. Redwing seems to make them on special order . The suggestion about having a smoth sole put on at a shoe shop also might be less expensive and I'd get to try them on before buying. I think I'll check into that option.
