If you are on a one way street in the left hand lane and are turning into the left lane of another one way street, yes it is legal. Otherwise it is not. We have one intersection in our town that it is allowed for this reason.

Stopped at a light in left hand of two lanes EACH direction, turning into a divided island two way, double lane each side, mall entrance. Home Depot was intended destination- probably Joe plumber needing some butt crack Spackle, I'd suspect, hence the urgency of the left turn on red light.:confused2::mur:

Much also depends on the child. All kids mature differently. Some have a good understanding of danger and how to avoid it at a younger age than others. A kid who has been raised on a farm around the daily use of such things also stands a better chance of being safe around such equipment than one that's got a weekend warrior (hobby farmer) parent. Some kids ya can hand the keys over age 13 for minor tasks, some kids ya can't let push the grocery cart at the store at age 20. The best parents don't parent from a textbook, they parent according to the child's abilities and development. Accidents can happen at any age, so you have to look at the individuals, not just lump them all into the group of "children" and say what is good for one is good for all... It is sort of like another thread here on TBN about the other end of the spectrum, the elderly. There's no way you can pick a specific cut-off age for people to operate cars and equipment, I know of a couple 75 year old men that could easily whoop on guys half their age (and would gladly do so if you tried taking their pickup or tractor keys).

When I see things like parents riding their kids around on machines and whatnot, I just say a little prayer that all will be safe and continue on my way believing (or hoping) they know their child and the risks they're taking better than I (I am just a passer-by after all). Many things people like to claim are "in the public's interest" are actually just ways of sticking their noses someplace it don't belong.

Fine with me as long as when (God forbid) the kid gets hurt they don't sue the manufacturer for making the machine idiot proof or do something else that costs me money (drives up the price of goods, insurance, adds regulations/laws to protect us from idiots, etc.) If they want to risk their kids life so be it but don't come crying when it happens. Full responsibility incurrs full blame too.

How do you feel about child safety seat laws for cars?

I totally agree with your statement. People shouldn't be able to sue a person, company, next door neighbor for something that they caused, and is totally there fault. As far as child safety seats, I think they are a good idea, but would like to know when it become the governments job to protect me from myself.

This post demonstrates someone who always thinks they know better than everyone else. It is impossible to "rate" the level of safety in a given situation unless you are there, you can't know better than the person that's there. Anyone can end up injured or killed doing almost anything... Life is full of risks if you pull yourself away from the PC and TV.

I have more issue with a parent that gives a kid unsupervised internet access or uses a TV as a babysitter and pays no attention to their kids...
i have to agree with you , i was raised around heavy equipment , and was opperating a d4 at the age of 10, but my x wife has let the xbox and tv do all her child training, it kills me that my son is 20 years old and he can't run my old 600 ford.

The reason the goverment has to step in is because the vast majority of people have no common sense. No different than passing a law that when it is raining headlights must be on. This is exactly why I started this thread.

You are exactly right.

Yup. The bubble wrapping of society, that gets less intelligent with each passing generation. The idiots used to punch their own ticket, now Sam protects and takes care of them.

A friend always says "Rules are made for those who can't think for themselves".
God gave me a good mind and responsible people to learn from, so I've used those advantages.
I'd rather have those than endless rules.

I saw a friend the other day, mowing with his adopted daughter on his lap.
He is extremely cautious and protective. You can judge him, and I can't stop you.
While I wouldn't be confortable doing it, I trust his judgement. He is safer on that mower with her on his lap than many parents that I see on the road, driving their kids around while talking on phones, distracted, taking risks to save a few seconds.

Wow.. glad my post started such debate..

However, I wasnt saying 'dont let the kid ride', I'm talking about the idiots who think its ok to go full blast while the blades are turning, whipping around the yard with their kid wearing diapers only in one hand, steering with the other, and a beer between thier knees. WSe all do stuff with our kids other parents might think is dumb, but most of us can agree on what is 'acceptable' given the skills and supervision present and what isnt.

I think MOST people understood what you were getting at. There are always a few who want to belabour a point.
