vista laptop - security center empty, firewall not on, can't update, add/remove prog

I have no clue how / why he even turned off the firewall to beginwith??
in any case. i just ran the MS fix it..wouldn't run. tried the offline fix it where you download fix it to a removeable media drive on a clean computer and then walk it over...then run it. still would not run

I don't think there is a nasty still there... I think I'm just dealing with trying to stitch the would the nasty left.

I've already booted using a cd with linux ( no viri.... ) and done a full virus and malware scan. nada....

that's the perplexing part..

Its probbaly Windows making a mess of itself itself. Re-install is the easiest way to fix, but removing Kaspersky and re-installing it may fix it.

the sfc just finished. made a 7meg log file that looks greek to me.

going to reboot the machine and see what if anything works on it now. :0

the hp recovery software is very limited in options.

I have seen some that simply let you 'repair' the OS instalation.. but keep user files and installed software.

the hp software is all or nothing... return to as purchased state.

Should let you create a boot CD and do a repair install from that.
Hate the all or nothing nature of the recovery partition.

The problem is that those laptops would be that they have Windows 8 on them...
When it comes to Windows: XP > Vista. 7 > Vista. 7 > 8.

While I agree Win8 could use some help, its basically Win7 (the greatest, btw ) with a new shell.. They can get new ones with Win7, but XP is out as the support is ending soon.
