We have let a wild grapevine grow up on the dog fence. This is the first year we have picked more than one or two grapes off it. I ate my fill today, and had a double handful to bring in the house. So far Mocha hasn't learned to pick them for herself, but if you drop one, she knows how to eat them.

Hi Larro,

Just a quick note to say that grapes can be toxic to dogs  so be careful with Mocha! Grape and raisin toxicity in dogs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We had grapes that we never got around to putting up on wire or anything, so they were spread all over the ground. I was going to go out the next day to pick the grapes but my dog got to them and ate every last one of them. Not a huge amount but i'd wager close to a bushel. She was absolutely stuffed with them. Didn't notice any ill effects, but i didn't know at that time that they could be toxic to dogs.

Knight9, thanks for the info. I don't think she ate very many. And it has been over 48 hours. But this might make me clip all the vines hanging on the inside of the yard when it's time to prune them. Until last summer I had always cut the vines back so they wouldn't weigh the fence down. With all the rain we had, they have really grown this year. I will clip them close this winter.

When I was a kid, my grandmother used to have grapevines along her back fence. They were concord grapes and would have these big luscious bunches of grapes that I loved. She also had Boysenberries growing on trellises in her yard. My brother and I were sneaking some berries one day and I thought I should go ask my grandmother if it was okay. I went into the house and said, "Grandmother, those berries in your back yard are great. Can Glen and I eat some of them?" She smiled and said, "Oh! You mean my Boysenberries." I turned and ran from the house screaming at my brother, "GLEN! GLEN! Don't eat them. They're poison berries." They didn't let me live that one down for a long, long time. Everyone in the house was laughing so hard they almost got sick. Absolutely true story.:)

Here are my "snake gourds" that grew up a five ft fence and just got longer rather than coiled. All these came from just two seeds planted and they grew vigorously along a 50 ft fence. I must have 15 gourds. What's not to like?
Now I have to figure out what to do with them.

Sixdogs, those are some neat gourds. I had never heard of them, but a Google search tells me you can eat them when they are young.

We grew some volunteer bushel gourds this year. Two came up by the front porch and I built a wire pen around them. But the darn things climbed right on up to the top of the house. We have picked two, there are two more almost ready and I saw two more on the roof. Since I was pressure washing the front porch, I slowly pulled the vines down from the roof. The two I had seen came down without any damage. But there was one growing in the rain gutter I hadn't seen. It has grown to the shape of the gutter, and I'm going to have to cut up to get it out.

Do you want to do a seed swap? I'll trade you some banana cantaloupe seeds for some snake gourd seeds. I would like to try growing those.

We picked peppers after supper. I had taken down the garden fence to till up the melons, and the deer have cropped most of the leaves off lots of the pepper plants. But they are still full of peppers. Here is what we got tonight.

Larro,

Thats some nice peppers. I am picking every other week now and getting around 125 bells and a half bushel each of banana and jalapeno. Should have peppers till frost. Everything else is finished.

I have planted lettuce, broccoli, and spinach for fall.

Also for the first time I planted garlic. Will have to wait until June/July next year to see how it does. If it does good we will plant around 250 cloves.

Here is a picture I took back in July. We were picking this amount every other day.

Sixdogs,

I have never planted that gourd but usually plant some bird house, bushel, and apple gourds. The apple gourds sell good if you paint them like an apple. If I get a chance I will take a picture of one tonight.

Funny story about the birdhouse and bushel gourds. My wife and I went to Lowes to buy some of those large Christmas Bulb things to hang on the fence for decoration.

They were $10-12 each:eek:. Me having a degree in Frugal Engineering went to the paint isle and purchased gold, red, green, and blue spray paint. I went home and painted about 15 of the gourds and hung them on the fence with some cheap garland.

Had lots of complements about how nice they looked and no one knew they were gourds until I told them. Then they wanted to buy some gourds:D

We are picking about 3 lb of okra every other day. We still have a few squash and I'm picking what might be the last of the blackeyes today. They are very 'threadbare' looking with lots of vines and very few leaves. We are running out of freezer space. I took 3-1/2 lb of okra to a neighbor on Tuesday along with a few yellow squash. We also have about 3 lb of cherry tomatoes ripening on the kitchen counter, but they are more marble size than cherry size. They still taste terrific in salads.

My wife picked the last of the parsley and basil early in the week and dried them in the dehydrator. We'll chop them and bottle them soon using a little spice chopper. My wife was thinking about mailing someone some chopped basil in an envelope. She said she'd just put a ziplock bag full in an envelope and mail it. I explained to her why that would probably be a bad idea considering what it looked like and had a very strong aroma. I can just see our house surrounded by screamin' DEA agents. They've been known to pull up people's okra plants because the leaves look a little like marijuana.:D
