I just got a 3pt wood splitter for my tractor (if I'm nice it might let me use it too) and was wondering if I should use teflon tape or something else when I screw the male quick connect fitting to the hydraulic lines.

Thank you,

Mark

If it's a tapered pipe thread, yes. If it is a mechanical thread using a seating surface of some type, no.

I believe Teflon paste would be better for NPT threads.

Teflon tape is a no-no for hydraulics.Use paste dope.

agree 100%.

I was told to use the dope style sealant from a hydraulic hose shop. they didnt even sell the tape.

Ditto above. Tape "can" be used if you are careful, but paste is what is reccomended for hydraulics. But thats only if they are NPT fittings. Jic fittings, O-ring fittings, and NPSM all do not need anything.

Thank you all for the info, I will see what my threads are, or ask, and get the paste if needed.

Teflon white paste is best, but tape can be used if applied correctly. The problem with tape is when you take the joint apart. Little pieces of the tape stay embedded in the female half of the joint and if not completely removed, could cause some problems with small orifices. I don't know if there is anything that small in a tractor hydraulic system but its better to be safe than sorry.
If you do have to use tape and ever have to take the joint apart, just remember to clean both male and female thread vigorously to remove all of the small tape particles.
I have a can of white Teflon paste that is oil based that I have been using for 40 years. I have to add a bit of motor oil occasionally to loosen it up but it works great on threads, only takes a dab.

Gasoila is my favorite. Covers just about all petroleum products.
