It went POP and OMG fluid went everywhere

A couple of days ago in the then 90+ degree heat and 3/8 of a mile from home hauling construction fill for a neighbor I heard a loud pop after I tried to raise the full loader bucket. Hydraulic fluid was coming out at a fast rate. I shut It down to try and find the leak but that was not very easy. A couple more startups and the neighbors help to spot the leak and we narrowed it down to this banjo bolt/O ring. The O ring had popped up out of the groove because the bolt was very loose. We put the O ring back into the groove and tightened the bolt and all is well. This occurred at 195 hours, and I lost over a gallon of fluid in seconds. You might want to put a wrench on that bolt.

When I got my used tractor I checked all the bolts, the guy working on the assembly line the day the tractor was built must have been lazy or angry at something, the right hand side setting in the seat was loose at least 85% of them, previous owner didn't bother to check them and some showed wear as if being loose for awhile.
After a good once over all is well.
Don't have a manual so I did Cat specs: tighten as much as you can without breaking the bolt.

I had a seep at that bolt, caught it before a major leak, torqued per manual. No more leak. Amazing how many of us have the same little issues.

I suppose that is fine if you are content SWAGing you torque, but, according to the GAE (German Autmotive Engineers), the proper spec for any bolt is exactly 1/16-turn less that it takes to break it. It is known as "gutentight".

ROFL, now that makes one smile to hear an analogy such as that, I would have thought "fregintight/frekintight" might be another spec.

Don't have a manual so I did Cat specs: tighten as much as you can without breaking the bolt.

In Britain this is known as "Armstrong" spec

not sure if you've ever checked your wheel bolts and loader frame bolts but it would be a good idea as wheel. i had several wheel bolts loose and one loader frame loose

Thanks. I checked mine today and it was a little loose and wet. 58 hours.

not sure if you've ever checked your wheel bolts and loader frame bolts but it would be a good idea as wheel. i had several wheel bolts loose and one loader frame loose

Several times now.. tnx. But I never thought to check that hydraulic joint bolt

I was told that you tighten until you feel the thread strip and then back off 2 flats.
But what do I know ? ?
