walking beam axle suspension question.

/ walking beam axle suspension question. #11
Planing on building a multi use trailer with a walking beam suspension. My question is I plan to use 2 x 3 x 1/8 " wall tubing but how do I make the holes through both sides of the tube for the stub axle? I have never seen a 1 3/4 drill bit . Would a bi metal hole saw drill through the tubs? Or is the a better tool?

A bi metal hole saw will work fine.If you have drill press even better.Just go slow,200RPM or less and use plenty of oil.

So I bought a 2x4 steel tube and a 1.25 hole saw. drilled the 8 holes Little sloppy but I could see the saw was slightly out of round as it spun.
Had some issues with the drill press at 195 rpms the belts would spins with very little presser on the bit. Increased it to 300 where the belt was a little tighter.
Been looking at different designs for these axles . Seem one with a zerk fitting built into the pivot point. Grease fitting drilled into the axle end??
What is that called so I can source them?

After the pilot bit punctures the steel, remove it and replace with a piece of smooth rod. The sides of the drill bit will cut an oversize hole and make the saw wobble.

That's an interesting idea, never thought of it. I've hole-sawed more holes than I care to count, hand-held is a pain to keep steady and hard on the wrists when (not if but when) the bit binds. I'm glad I have a heavy duty Metabo drill with clutch (no, not the kind of clutch on your cordless) Drill press is much better. I'll have to try this next time to see if I notice a difference.

Don't think that was the case here The pilot bit was straight it was the saw that was just a bit out of round. What do you want for $8.00
