Thinking of building a log home in Georgia

Someone needs to come up with a plastic log. It is the only thing that would beat the bees.

My daddy built my cousin Wayne a stick house on five acres of land we sold him. Daddy sided it with rough cut oak 2X12's and put up pine wanes{boards with the bark on one side} over that. He made it look like a log house. The inside walls were red oak 1X6's. It was a very rough built house, but cost almost nothing but time, nails and fuel for the sawmill. Wayne still had bee problems, but with the pine wanes being so soft, they stopped with it, and didn't bother the oak.

One thing I neglected to mention is how quiet it is! Those thick logs really keep it quiet and are lovely to look at. Helps with heat and A/C too!

I mentioned earlier in this thread about a "log" home we looked at that was built with PT 6x6 timbers. It looked real nice but the plans were not very efficient. This was before the EPA banned CCA pressure treatment but I could see the ban was on the horizon. Figured, even if the plans could be improved, the CCA ban was going to be very problematic if we had to sell the house. The nice thing about using the PT wood is that there was no worry about rot or bugs. The houses did look good too.

Later,
Dan

You should contact with a good builder. Recently I build my log home by some builders within reasonable price and I am totally satisfied with their work. They also helps me in interior designing. Try to search for some these kind of builders and remember one thing that online dealing gets fake sometime so deal live with builders.

Old Kentucky Logs is a concrete siding product that looks like log,
I have also seen insulated vinyl siding that has a radius that looks like a log.

I built a log cabin in Alaska using large (18 inch) sitka spruce. We got a permit to fall the trees on state land and hauled them on a trailer to our land. It took 132 logs to build the cabin, I remember because part of the permit required that I record a "log record" of each log and turn it back into the state. I built an Alaska mill and two-sided each log. Used electric winches on my jeep, come alongs, snatch blocks etc, etc to get the logs in place. Took every weekend - all summer - to complete the job. Raised the floor two feet off the ground on sono tubes for good ventilation under the cabin. Cabin was 24 x 36, two story, built in 1967 and still stands and is used to this date.

Things I learned building this cabin - THINK & DO SAFETY( we were in a very remote location; approx a five hour drive to the nearest medical facilities, freshly cut & pealed logs are VERY difficult to handle, Choose wisely when friends ask to help - my friend seriously cut his leg while barking a log with a very heavy draw knife - after that accident I never again had friends help. The drive to get him to medical facilities was a nerve wracking ordeal. If you have heavy equipment - back hoe - use it wisely. I had nothing except the jeep winch, which was probably lucky on my part. Take lots of pictures, I did, you are likely to never do this again.
