Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said 71-year-old Sol Anderson was injured at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when a tractor he was working on rolled forward over him.

The incident happened at 924 E. Strain Road, which is off South Lindsay Lane.

W.O. Sledge told The News Courier he was working on the tractor痴 ignition with Anderson and 田ranked the tractor as Anderson was standing against it and the tractor was in gear and lurched forward, and 途un on to Anderson.

Sledge said Anderson, å*µot hung and the front wheel caught him.

å¾¹ur department along with Athens Fire Department and Athens-Limestone Ambulance service responded, said Johnson. é„*nderson was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital and flown by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital.

Witnesses said Anderson was conscious and talking after the accident.

A hospital spokeswoman said Anderson was being treated in the emergency room at 6 p.m. Wednesday. She said he was listed in fair condition.

I sincerely hope that he gets better and doesn't have future problems. That accident, IMHO, was preventable. Paying attention doesn't cost any Money, just time allocated to check the surroundings.

Amen, unfortunately it seems to take an accident now and again to remind us silly humans. Doesn't matter how much we learn, some things always need relearned. Caution and safety can never be preached enough. Unfortunately these guys likely got caught up in talking and simply were not paying attention, which can happen to even the most cautious of people.

Who needs a neutral safety switch?

Who needs a neutral safety switch?

I do as long as it's a true blue mechanical disconnect switch and not some weird sorta solid state sensor and a line of computer code in an ECU. :D

Who needs a neutral safety switch?

My 4105 has one. I can't start the engine unless it's in neutral... same difference as my automatic Ute, can't start unless I'm in Park.

(unless you were being facetious?) :)

((Oooooh. Big Word. My brain hurts))

Time to ban killer tractors!!

Yes, I was being sarcastic :)

I'm certainly not making light of the victim's injuries, but you have to wonder if he knew that the machine had been modified to start in gear. Of all the safety devices on a tractor, that's probably the most critical.

I am no expert on old Fords, but I doubt it ever even had any kind of Neutral safety switch. I know our old Farmall Super A sure did not. If you left it in gear and hit the starter it would move forward. These older tractors just don't have much safety equipment.

That looks like a early 70ish model 3000 or 4000. They came out of the factory with a neutral safety switch. When they fail, lots of folks wired around them instead of buying a replacing them. Cheap insurance at less than $13. http://www.tractorpartsinc.com/ford_tractor_parts_neutral_safety_switches_544_ctg.htm
