For over ten years I've had the best farm cat. He patrolled many acres of kicking out undesirables up to and including woodchucks. I've literally even seen him stalk a deer once.

Well, now he just watches the woodchucks eat whatever is in the gardens like he's watching a nature show on a Laz-Y-Boy with a remote and a beer.

Oh well, he earned it. He's a GREAT cat. Just hope it's normal and he's around for many more years. The vet said he's fine.

I need a couple farm cats. Something - coyote or hawk - ate my last one last fall. I've been piddling around and now its too late in the year to get young ones. Next spring. I didn't realize how much the cat did until this year w/out a cat. The pocket gophers are really having a field day and the mice think they have found nirvana.

Well it depends on the cat, but some of them get pretty inactive in their "senior years". Heck you didn't expect him to work every day of his life did you?:)

Definitely one of the most overlooked and underrated "accessories" on any farm.
We had an explosion of coyotes where I am and also hear fisher cats occasionally so I started putting him in every night (even when he objects). Looks like it worked because he's still ticking and pretty healthy. He has just slowed down a bit and hangs out at the senior center and now prefers playing shuffleboard and Pinochle over his former rambunctious ways.

Not to worry. I threw him a HUGE retirement party.

Ours disappeared about 5 years ago now. The Fox moved in the back corner Den and she & kits are fun to watch and I have 22lr so most of the stuff is well cleared. Need to find a good cat to patrol but neighbors have a ton so not too bad around my place right at the barn & garage tho. The Fox comes into the back yard and takes care of a lot of the moles and mice & fun to watch. I dont have chickens or other pets/livestock so I let them be & gives me a great place to dispose of wood chucks ;)

Cool sounding cat!
We had a smallish pound cat. One day the dogs dug up a rabbit nest and were flinging the baby rabbits up in the air and eating them, our little kitty thought that was pretty cool and came over to play too. The dogs just ran her over a few time while playing with the rabbits, so she left in a huff. Only to return a few minutes later, dragging some kind of rodent, not much smaller then her, kind of dragging it between her legs, it was so big. You could just tell she was saying, "Thats right, check it out, this is how it's done. Not those puny baby rabbits, but real prey."

Have his kidneys checked..

Will do. I'll mention that specifically on his next visit to the vet just to be sure.

Nothing too alarming. He still plays, hunts, eating/ bathroom habits haven't changed. This is just the 1st year he quit going after the bigger stuff and generally isn't in his usual 100% "must....protect...........territory!" mode anymore. He turned 11 this summer. Roughly 65 in human years.

I hope he's ok. I'll definitely give it a mention.
