DK 40 ; how many GPH ?

My DK45S still has in excess of 5 gal in the tank when the gauge reads empty. I use very little fuel unless I'm running a PTO load (like a mower), which consumes HP at high RPM. Just moving around and running the loader seems to use very little fuel. But my gear-transmission tractor runs at pretty low RPM for most loader work (vs high RPM with a mower). I suspect the HST version will use considerably more fuel because of the higher required engine RPM, At higher RPM, all kinds of parasitic losses (from the cooling fan to viscous forces in the tranny) will consume engine power in the HST models.

Parasitic losses?:confused2: Not MY DK-40 HST! It must be YOUR extra 5HP that you're carrying around that's sucking up most of your extra fuel! 'Viscous forces', OK Darth, turn off the lighsaver and come back to earth.
Seriously, though, I don't think one looses a lot of fuel to differences between manual and HST trannies; butI'm sure there are those who would argue otherwise.
It would be nice if Kioti could use a guage that reflected actual use, with an accurate reserve, with a light, just like an actual fuel gauge found on everything else on earth; (well except my Scag- NO gauge at all!).:duh: Wildcat:thumbdown::confused3:

I was wondering about that same thing, Consumption difference between HST vs Gear. Only time I see higher RPM's is brush hogging and backhoe work, Other than that it's at idle or a hair above.

But then again I am partial to manual transmissions and do enjoy the fuel economy in all my vehicles.

My new 1025 uses about twice the fuel as my 4010 did, and the 1025 has only 5 more hp over the 4010's 18.5. A friend of mine has a larger Kubota. He says the new one is using more fuel than the old one. Think it's something to do with the tier 3 emissions controls. Normally, emission controls reduce fuel consumption because they have to be more efficient to get emissions down. Seems not to be the case with these tier 3 machines.

Have 5 gallons ready. Start with a full tank and run it to "empty"(should be between 4 & 5 hrs). Stop and dump in the 5 gal...I bet thats all it will take which means you still had 5-6 gallons in there.

Does the HST use more fuel, yep sure does!! How much more, I would bet about 2 quarts of fuel per 10 gallons. Can I live with that? OH HECK YA. If it was 20% more I would be good with it. Ran a gear tractor yesterday, NO THANK YOU. CJ

My working RPM burns about 1 gallon per hr on my DK40HST. Yes the fuel tank sender read empty when there is still almost 5 gallons in the tank....that's a heck of a "reserve"

I don't think my fuel gauge is quite that bad. Maybe a couple of gallons left in reserve with the needle at E. I don't mind though as I'd rather not run out of fuel while a mile away from my fuel supply.

On gallons/hr, I don't usually run (actually almost never run) as high as rated PTO speed but with 1800rpm for backhoe work or 2200 for most mowing, I use less than 1 gal/hr. Maybe something like 0.75g/hr average. I got about 0.5gal/hr with my CK20 but that stands to reason. And, when I think about the amount of work that gets done with a tractor hour compared to what my hands and back can accomplish, I wouldn't care if the DK drank 5 gallons/hr, I'd just refuel more often!

My thoughts exactly. When I think of how many tons of rocks I can move with a gallon of diesel it is unreal! Tractors cost a lot of money, but the amount of work they will do for the amount of fuel they use is a bargain!

I appreciate all the replies.

Yesterday I took out the DK40 and at start it was right on E. An hour later needle below E. 1 1/2 hours after that finished doing the drive and other stuff. So after 21/2 hours on E still had fuel. Must be the gauge.

Thanks again.

If I were you I would just fill it up now and calculate how much fuel you added (can always weigh the remainder of the last 5 gallon can to calculate what's left). It is a PITA to run out and have to bleed air from the system in the field.
