Can this problem be fixed? When doing a copy from a webpage then pasted into a TBN post, some special characters are converted into gibberish.

Here are some examples:

Original - Jim Martin, "Congress must take bi-partisan action
Pasted - Jim Martin, é*„*蟋穎gress must take bi-partisan

Original - Jim Martin, "As predicted
Pasted - Jim Martin, 鬩?s predicted

Original - "When a government program
Pasted - 陞サé**en a government program

Original - that it's already
Pasted - that it騾橸スエ already

I have been wondering why some posts look like that. Certainly know nothing about it.

You are copying and pasting enriched text.

There may be an easier way to get rid of the problem, but one way is to copy the text to Notepad or similar editor. Save the text and then copy and paste to TBN.

Does Jim Martin speak with a strange accent?

Specifically, TBN doesn't handle angled single/double quotes and those all must be replaced with straight single or double quotes.

Yup, Steve got it right. It's because you are copying embedded HTML into the text editor box and that freaks out the wysiwyg editor. Copy and paste it into notepad (or if you are on a Mac, use textedit) and than copy it out and then into TBN, and it will work fine (notepad will strip the HTML out of it).

Okay, thanks for the workaround.

Why not just goto the General settings and change the editor type and use the one that works for you. There are three choices. -kid

Its not on the general tab and there are more than three choices if you have any "office" type programs installed. And none of them work with the angled quotes that we can find.

I notice it happens when I copy my written text in the posting box into Word to check for typo's and then copy and paste it back into the posting box, I get all sorts of crazy characters in it where it made corrections.

Its because your version of Word is set to use "Smart Quotes" see How to Turn Off Smart Quotes in MS Word 2010 for how to turn them off.
