Hydraulic fluid safety?

i agree.. do not BREATHE or DRINK large amounts of hyd fluid.

I don't recommend breathing or drinking small amounts of it either if at all possible ... Just not high on my top 10 list of things that I want to do.

No, we have to worry about the sue happy idiot morons useing some of this stuff. Thats why this stuff is printed!! Like putting your motorhome on cruise and then going in the back and making a cup of coffee while the motorhome crashed [DUH] Then suing and WON. What does that say about the judge!!! Seriously!! Mineral based oils typically are relatively harmless as noted. Some of the fire resistant phosphate esters or polyole (spelling) esters are a different matter. Some of these eat paint, standard Buna-N seals etc.

Granted I doubt you will find these in any normal farm equipment.

Have you ever heard of Skydrol? Designed and quoted a power unit for Boing aircraft and had to be compatible with that crap. I'll never do that again. CJ

You guys (presumedly) beat me to it.....standard hyraulic oil is not organophosphate based, nor are the additives. Somebody's trying to scare all of us for a specialty application. In fact, organophophates are a class of chemicals still used for many insecticides. DDT was part of that class.

Standard hydraulic oil is of no concern, except when hot or pressurized.

You should be okay then.

I was underneath my home made excavator the other day fixing a broken metal line that snapped off in the hydraulic pump pressure port. I had the hydraulic pressure hose sticking up to prevent fluid loss and it moved out of position and started pouring fluid on my face and got a bit in my mouth. It didn't taste very good. lol

My dad was loading it up in Kansas to bring it to Arkansas for me and the chain he was lifting it with slipped and somehow managed to snap the 1/4" metal nipple that was attached to the pump.

I have to fix the carburetor on it otherwise he would've just crawled it up onto the trailer.

Much of the aircraft hyd oil (Skydrol, Aero HFA, Texaco hyd oil #15 ect) has some nasty chemicals mixed in....the warnings tell to wash clothes separately and wash hands totally before eating
