Tractor
John Deere 3520
So I'm running the 3520 with a Turbo tree saw on the back, cutting hedge trees and moving the carcasses to a brush pile with the front end loader. I was on the way to the brush pile pushing a load, heard a distinct "thump" or muted "pop", the tractor stops moving and I have a flashing error code 57 on the display. No amount of peddle pushing will make it move, forward or backward. The error code is persistent, even after shutting the tractor off (and eventually disconnecting the battery for a few minutes). I have been under the tractor and can't find any loose connectors or broken wires, including a look under the pedal assembly protective cover. I did remove a piece of hedge branch (1" or so in diameter) from under the right floorboard that may have in fact been the source of the thump, but I don't know that for sure. Of course the manual isn't much help here, just tells me the HST computer is not communicating, or words to that effect.

Any "most likely" place to look for a broken wire or bad connector?

Hi Gary,

I think 57 is when both pedals are depressed, so HST doesn't function... are you sure the entire branch & area are clear and the pedals are back to the top of their range? The same error comes up when you push both pedals down by accident... you may have something jammed uo under the shroud on the right side of the seat. If you can't see anything, pull the seat & shroud & see if something got way up in there where the pedals originate.

Both pedals pressed should be err 02. The err 57 is TCU not communicating over the can bus. I would look for damaged CAN bus wiring or possibly the TCU lost power.

My 3720 throws an ERR01 when both pedals are inadvertently depressed. ERR02 and 03 are for the individual pedals; "voltage signal out-of-range or not calibrated". But I'm not smart enough to understand what an ERR57 means from a "do-it-yourself" perspective;
Err 57
HST Timeout.
No response from HST controller.
Clearly the HST controller is the place to start, but as you say - the owner manual is no help beyond that. But you can probably be sure that following the advice to let the dealer fix it - will not be cheap. I got an ERR06 last year; something related to the MFWD. The replacement module cost $85, but the labor to replace it was over $400

My bad...it was early.
Just keep looking for a damaged cable or plug.

Yeah... or you could just CHECK THE #%^&$%# FUSE!!!!

Somewhat embarrassing, eh? Turns out the transmission controller has it's own 10 amp fuse in the fusebox. Of course we still don't know root cause, but at least the tractor is moving again. And BTW, once we had it moving, we even found the source of the noise mentioned in the original post... it was "muted" because it was a beer bottle being run over by the LR tire. Holy crap. :)

Anyway, thanks everyone!

good to hear it is moving again--but how the he!! did a broken beer bottle pop the fuse??

I believe the beer bottle thing was pure coincidence. Like I said, we probably haven't found the root cause. My best guess is that the hedge branch was involved somehow. If so, it will probably blow another fuse at some point, but I've now continued sawing and stacking for over an hour with no problem so far.
