Cylinder repair Ford backhoe

Glad you got it running again Loopman but someone saw you coming....that seal kit should've cost much less than that

What was the dimensions of the cyl (rod dia, bore dia)

The 4500 kits I make up piece meal but they should not run much more than $100-150

What would be the indication of piston seals leaking? - low 'strength' from the cylinder, slow movement etc ???

Less power, slower under heavy load, and bleeding down faster than normal are all symptoms that could indicate piston seals.

BUT, all of those symptoms could also come from a worn out valve spool as well.

Stabilisers are 3 1/2 " cylinder with a 1 1/2" rod (from memory), Ford/New Holland seal kit from an old manual has part number '309938' - local hydraulic agent said these were going to be $460 EACH cylinder (genuine parts sourced from Ford/NH in the US and freighted to Australia).

As I said, just ended up getting the gland seals, for these rams alone this was $13 PER seal, 5 x per cylinder = $65. (Larger ones for the crowd cylinder were $24 each = $120 just for the gland)

The rod seals (v-packing sets) are standard sizes but the piston v-packings are unusual ford only......some bores are 3.520 ect......next time you get one apart measure the bore and id of the seals (assuming they are v-packings) and the height.......I have them in stock and can at least give you a part number to order online somewhere close to you
