Right now I'm leaning towards the .308. We haven't decided on a brand yet, but I'm leaning towards a regular sized rifle and getting a smaller stock for her. I like Hogue, so that's what I'm hoping to find for whatever rifle we end up with. I also want a good trigger. Savage has the Accutrigger that I've been reading about that seems pretty good. The trigger on my Browning A bolt is also very nice, so I'm hoping the X bolt is as nice if we go with Browning. My Remington 700 BDL came with a crappy trigger, but I replaced it with a Timney trigger that I like a lot!!!! What I'm hoping for is to find a rifle with everything already in it and not needing any changes.
One of the things that I'm really hesitant on with the youth model rifles is the smaller barrel length. I'm a big believer that longer is better, so for the rifle that she will have to hunt with the rest of her life, I want it to be up to the task for here, but also able to take a Mule deer in the mountains or a pronghorn out in the plains.
I've never heard of or tried Managed Recoil ammunition, but from what I've been told and read, it might be the way to go. With less recoil, she should be able to get used to the rifle and then work her way up to more powerful ammo if we go out of state to hunt in the future.
