does anyone know if you can increase the pump flow/pressure on these splitters
, if so how. ?

thanks, olddtire

Just about all log splitter valves have a relief valve on them and can be adjusted.

The engine is probably running the largest pump it can with the available HP.

If you get a larger engine you can get a larger pump and have more volume.

The relief valve should already be set close to pumps max pressure.

The answer is yes you can adjust it higher to tweak it out some more, however you are taking a chance on doing this.

Are you trying to split bigger/harder wood than it was designed for, or simply trying to make it cycle faster? I dont think you get very much of either as, like J_J says, they are sold adjusted pretty much to max already.

thanks guys for the feed back.

no not really just a wondering. how would you check the pressure. ?
how would you know what the pressure is suppose to be set at. ?
is the adj. on the valve or the pump. ?

thanks.......

To check and adjust pressure a gauge will need to be installed between the pump and control valve. The relief in the control valve can then be adjusted to increase pressure. If the relief is set too high the engine will stall or if the engine produces more hp. then intended for that particular size pump the relief pressure can be increased to the point at which the pump breaks.

Max. psi setting depends on the pressure ratings of the various system components. The cylinder will typically have the lowest rating generally 2500-3000 psi working pressure.

The advertised tonnage of most retail splitters is based on pressure spikes not working pressure.

Remove the input hose and add a tee for the 3000 psi hyd gage .

So now, the gage will read the pressure at any time while splitting or not.

The log splitter valves can be adjusted for the main relief and the kick back to neutral relief valve.

The relief setting is based on the pumps max pressure. Should be in the manual or call the manufacturer/dealer.

thanks guys,

I may install a gauge just to see what pressure the unit is working at. any one gauge better than another. ?

thanks......

Liquid filled hyd gage 3000 psi.

Any gauge you want that is at least 3000psi rated.

But if you plan on tee-ing in, make SURE you get hydraulic fittings. NOT just plumbing fittings from your local box store. Go to a hydraulic shop, or order from a hydraulic sales place online.
